College receives national Paragon Award
"Best in Show" among two-year colleges in the nation

Congratulations to David Golden, Tony Doupe, Clyde Guarrido, the Public Information Office and all those involved in the production of the Shoreline Community College Promotional video.  This video, shown at Opening Day, has received a Gold Paragon award from the National Council of Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR).  This is the only national competition that exclusively honors excellence in marketing at two-year colleges. It is an exceptional award for our College to receive and most definitely recognizes the in-house talent of our faculty, students, and staff.

"It was quite an honor for me to accept the award on behalf of the College," said Judy Yu, Director of Communications.  "The video was an all-out team effort, and it's fantastic that a panel of judges appreciated the quality of the production, the writing, and the talent involved."

What's next after this?  "Now that we have all this footage, we are going to turn out a series of 60-second clips of programs and departments," replies Yu.  "Video is best suited for bringing the emotion of students and staff to the screen.  It's a good recruiting tool to have at our disposal."

Tenure was awarded at the March 16th Board of Trustees Meeting to the following faculty:  Nikki Honey, Dental Hygiene; Betty Peace-Gladstone, Education; Daina Smuidrins, ESL; Susan Sparks, Speech Language Pathology Assistant; Alicia Zweifach, Academic Advisor. Many of the tenure committee members were there to honor the faculty along with their friends and family.  Congratulations to these faculty!  (Photo to left:  Alicia Zweifach poses with Board members.)

"Here at Shoreline, we continue to attract wonderful new faculty members, and I can’t think of a better example of that than these newly-tenured individuals," says VP Carol Henderson.  "Every one of them is talented, hard-working, and well qualified, and they all care so much about helping their students succeed and about sustaining the quality of their programs.  They have all worked intensively with their appointment review committees to achieve the goal of tenure, and have put a great deal of time and effort into the tenure process.   Congratulations to all of them, and many thanks to everyone serving as a tenure committee member – the tenure process only works as well as it does because of you!"

Three years of Academic Calendars approved by Board of Trustees
At the March meeting of the Board of Trustees, the Calendar Committee, chaired by Registrar Robin Young, presented academic calendars for the next three years.  The Calendar Committee, comprised of faculty, classified and administrative staff, and students, tackled the issues of scheduling each of the academic quarters while being mindful of considerations presented by the Joint Union Management Committee (JUMC).  These issues included an equal number of instructional days for each day of the week, in-service day beginning in 2006, prep day, three exam days, and other key issues.  Calendars have been approved for 2005-06, 2006-07, and tentatively for 2007-08.

The academic calendars will be distributed by the President's Office or you can download copies of the calendar from the College web site.

Update on the TRIO Grant
Word was received from Senator Murray's office Friday morning that Shoreline's TRIO Student Support Services grant application to the U.S. Department of Education was denied. A proposal score and other written feedback from the Department's scoring panel should be available in the next few weeks. The 4-year project would have supported additional staff and resources to provide intensive student retention services for low income, disabled, and first-generation students. Unlike most other grants, TRIO grants are refundable. It is rare for first-time TRIO proposals to be funded. At this point, the plan is for the Grants Office and Student Services to closely review the proposal feedback and try again in three years at the next opportunity to apply for this grant. If you have any questions, contact John Lederer in the Grants Office (ext. 6708 or jlederer@shoreline.edu).

New practice in computer lab promises to cut down on waste
Who wouldn't agree?  We all need to be more cognizant of waste -- and at the College, we can help by being more aware of the amount of paper that is being wasted each day.  Beginning Spring Quarter 2005, a print management solution will be implemented to help curb paper and resource waste on campus.  It is anticipated that there will be a reduction of waste of up to 70%, or 1.3 million sheets of paper per year in the General Use Student Lab.  This solution will be placed on the open computers on the main floor of the Library Technology Center and on the computers in the General Use Student Lab.  This will be funded by a printing fee of 2 cents per page.  Keep in mind that there will be no refunds for unused credits at the end of the quarter.  These credits can be purchased at a Value Add Machine located on the main floor of the Library Technology Center, and will be stored on your student ID card. These are the lowest printing rates in the country for college and university students.   Questions or concerns?  Email: printing@shoreline.edu.  The photo above shows the amount of paper that needs to be recycled from only one computer lab for only one day.

Student Programs' Lisa Smith was selected the SCC Star of the Quarter for Winter Quarter 2005.  One nominator said, "When I walk into the Student Programs office, Lisa is surrounded by a ring of students.  She is extremely student-centered and it is obvious that our students feel that she provides a safe place for them on campus.  Students' adoration of Lisa is very evident.  In each of Lisa's interactions with students that I've observed, she has been helpful, kind and respectful ― always ready to lend a hand or provide a hug."  Another letter of nomination said, "I have just been getting the Film Club restarted and she has helped me everyday so far, allowing me to be able to restart the club, and she has been very friendly. COLLEGE GALLERY

Adolescent: Portraits 1992-2004
Unique paintings on glass by Seattle artist Jessica Dodge
The works of Seattle artist, Jessica Dodge will be exhibited at the College Gallery at Shoreline Community College through April 7, 2005.  Adolescent: Portraits 1992-2004 is an exhibit of portraits of adolescents as they begin their journey away from childhood.

"I'd like to add something about reverse painting on glass, my most common media," says Dodge. "When I started using this technique, just out of art school (twenty years ago) I found that conceiving a composition in reverse and layering the color on from behind the viewing surface was an intriguing challenge, and the luminous quality of the oil paint, when viewed through the glass, was exciting. Canvas is expensive and old windows are generally cheap or free, so I was able to experiment for many years, developing several techniques that integrated my drawing and painting styles with the properties of the glass. Finally, though I don't always use actual windows any longer (as it's the glass, not the frame, that's important) I still paint on glass because it continues to challenge and intrigue me."

Dodge has painted this series of works over the last 12 years.  She has included paintings of her own daughter, Laurel, since her first few weeks.  “One of the things I most enjoy about painting people who are not yet adults is the feeling that I'm catching them at a fleeting, transient moment in their narrative as they move away from childhood,” says the artist.

Artist quote:  “In addition to the persistent presence of storytelling and mythology in my work, I often have an interest in traditional subject matter; the still life, the landscape and the portrait, either in service to a narrative piece, or to stand on their own.

For more information about the exhibit or upcoming exhibits, please contact Gallery Director Natalie Niblack at x4433.  The College Gallery is located in the Administration Building, 1000.  Gallery hours are 9 am. To 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
