REQUEST FOR CORE COURSE DISCIPLINE ADVISORS
The Curriculum Committee has been working on a process for implementing the approved core course criteria for Quantitative/Symbolic Reasoning, Multicultural Understanding, and Communication.  As part of the review process for any proposed core course we would like to have input from colleagues with expertise in each of these areas.  If you are interested in becoming a Core Course Discipline Advisor for any of these three areas, please email your name and short description outlining your qualifications to John Backes in the Office of Instruction by Tuesday November 13th.   The VPAA and the Dean Team will be responsible for evaluating and selecting between 3 and 5 discipline experts for each of the three core course areas.  As of last week, 5 people have volunteered for Quantitative/Symbolic Reasoning, 1 person has volunteered for Multicultural Understanding (though 4 people have recently expressed an interest), and 1 person has volunteered for Communication.

We are currently envisioning that a selected discipline advisor would review proposed MCOs relative to the core course criteria (see the Curriculum Committee web site on the SCC Intranet for a listing of the criteria) and make a recommendation as to whether a proposed course satisfies the criteria or not.  This MCO review and recommendation could all be done electronically and at this point, we are not planning on creating a committee of advisors that would need to meet formally, though advisors could choose to do this on their own if they wished.  The recommendations of these selected advisors would then be passed on to the curriculum committee.  The curriculum committee would then make a formal recommendation to the VPAA after taking all input into account.  In instances where there are disagreements, the Curriculum Committee would request that the advisor either attend the next curriculum committee meeting to clarify their positions in person or submit a written explanatio
n for their decision.  The services of selected advisors will be on an as-needed basis.

If you have any other questions about what this responsibility would entail, please feel free to contact Don Christensen or Susan Hoyne.  Thanks!
