OUTLOOK OUT OF OFFICE REPLIES TO THE INTERNET HAVE BEEN TURNED ON
Many months ago, Out-of-Office Assistant (OOA) replies to the Internet were
turned off due to spam backscatter that resulted in our email system being
blacklisted by anti-spam databases. The backscatter was primarily caused by OOA
replies to spam messages flagged by our anti-spam software. Our new anti-spam
software, Postini, filters out spam messages before they reach your inbox, so
this is no longer an issue. The last of the mailboxes were converted from the
old system to the new system, and the old software was removed on Tuesday. OOA
replies to the Internet are now on. Additionally, our email system will soon be
upgraded allowing for more flexibility with OOA messages. As an example, you
will be able to specify different messages for on-campus and off-campus senders.

NOTICE ON BUILDING
CLOSURES FOR NEW TRANSFORMER PROJECT
The transformer that has provided power to the 1400, 1500, 1600 and 1700
buildings for years has given its last hoo-rah. Although it provided reliable
electrical service for years, it can no longer meet the power needs of all the
classrooms and offices in those buildings, so a new one will be installed.
Installation will require that these buildings be without power from Aug.20 –
Sept. 11.
“This was the best time
we could find to hook up the new transformer,” said Facilities Director Bob
Roehl, referring to the timing of the project taking place between quarters in
order to affect as few people as possible. Roehl also said that the new
transformer will meet all code requirements and will be easier to access since
it won’t be underground in a vault like the former one was. No Power
signs have also been posted at several locations around the buildings.
Read more at On Campus blog.

The Shoreline Community College Athletic Department announces the current

student-athletes have signed NWAACC Letters of Intent to attend SCC Fall Quarter
and become part of the SCC athletic family. The defending NWAACC Northern Region
Champions, the SCC women's soccer team has signed 10 new athletes to
grant-in-aids. The rebuilding men's basketball team has inked eight new

CHANGES IN FINANCIAL AID TO HELP STUDENTS
College enrollments for summer and fall quarters are shooting through the roof
and so have the numbers of those seeking help with school costs. Financial aid
requests at Shoreline Community College are up by 50 percent and in response,
college officials are making changes to get money to students more quickly.
To help meet the demand, the SCC Financial Aid Office
will dedicate Tuesdays and Thursdays to reviewing student files and awarding and
packaging financial aid. Starting July 6 and through mid-August, students
seeking financial aid will be directed to Enrollment Services on those days.
The new process will help reduce the typical 8-10 week wait time for financial
aid approval.
Students are always encouraged to apply for financial
aid as early as possible, but current circumstances make that advice all the
more critical.

SCC
OUTLINES PERSONNEL IMPACTS FROM BUDGET CUTS
While no one would characterize the
personnel impacts of state-mandated budget reductions at Shoreline Community
College as anything but painful with more than 20 positions eliminated, making
those cuts ultimately involved only two actual layoffs.
“We worked very hard to find
options for people,” said SCC President Lee Lambert, adding that contract-based
bumping and position reversion rights, combined with employees’ choices, made
for a sometimes-convoluted process. “Sometimes that process took more time, but
we wanted to make sure everyone had every chance. I want to thank (Vice
President for Human Resources and Legal Affairs) Stephen Smith taking the lead
on working through these difficult times.”
Lambert acknowledged that
even with those efforts, the college and many good people were affected. “OK,
two layoffs, but we still lost good, valuable people through retirements, tenure
buyouts and people deciding to leave,” he said. “Those people represent a lot of
experience and knowledge.”

BEWARE OF HOT, DRY WEATHER
Please
be aware of the dangers of dry weather and high temperatures, such as
bushfires, which actually took place on campus yesterday between the
Parent-Child Center and the Automotive Center. Although it may seem
harmless, a very small bush fire can quickly turn into a real problem if
a wind presents itself and distributes the embers to other dangerously
dry locations. Dry leaves and branches can also escalate the fire as
can the slope of the land. Be sure to extinguish all combustibles in
approved containers. Again, please take extra care during these dry,
hot spells. Thank you. A Shoreline

CONSERVING ENERGY FRIENDLY REMINDER
What can we do about conserving energy? It is within the control of each of us
to do many small things that can add up to potential energy savings for the
college. Offices, classrooms, rest rooms, hallways, and other lights are often

progress towards conserving energy. Thank you for any help you can provide as

University. Shoreline was one of some 600 higher education institutions
acknowledged for supporting Tulane students when the prestigious university was
forced to close its doors for a semester due to flooding caused by Hurricane
Katrina in 2005. President Lambert received a letter from Tulane President,

JAY INSLEE WEARS SCC BASEBALL UNIFORM AT
ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL BASEBALL GAME
U.S.
Congressmen leave their suits and ties in their closets one day each year and
choose, instead, to wear baseball jerseys and head for Nationals Stadium to play
ball. This year marked the 48th year of the Roll Call Congressional Baseball
Game, and Rep. Jay Inslee, who in the past has worn uniforms from district high
schools, decided to wear the Shoreline Community College baseball uniform this
year. One might say that the jersey brought the blue team good luck, as they
took home the trophy, the first time since 2000, with a 15 to 10 win.

COMMENCEMENT
Shoreline Community College is one of six colleges and universities in
Washington state to be recognized in the 2009 commencement program at Tulane
University. Shoreline was one of some 600 higher education institutions
acknowledged for supporting Tulane students when the prestigious university was
forced to close its doors for a semester due to flooding caused by Hurricane
Katrina in 2005. President Lambert received a letter from Tulane President,
Scott S. Cowen, informing him of Shoreline's tribute. President Cowen said, "I
will always be grateful to the higher education community for what you did for
our students and for Tulane. We will never forget your kindness and
generosity. Thank you." The Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees
adopted Resolution No. 91 on October 26, 2005. Establishing an Operating Fee
Waiver for Citizens Displaced as a Result of Hurricane Katrina.

CONSERVING ENERGY FRIENDLY REMINDER
What can we do about conserving energy? It is within the control of each of us
to do many small things that can add up to potential energy savings for the
college. Offices, classrooms, rest rooms, hallways, and other lights are often
left on when they are not needed. Electronic devices could be turned off at
night, including computers and printers. If we work together, we can make real
progress towards conserving energy. Thank you for any help you can provide as
you go about your work each day.
