SCC 2006-07 PHONE DIRECTORY UPDATES
Due by Thursday, October 5 at 5:00 pm

The paper version of the 2006-07 SCC Phone Directory will be published in October by College Communications (aka PIO).  We are using a new online system developed by Linda Mickelberry in Technology Support Services (TSS) to update your names, titles, and other critical contact information. The online system allows you to make the updates directly to the database through a web page.

You will need your Windows ID and password in order to enter the system. This updating will only take about one minute of your time, so please start now by clicking on the following link: http://success.shoreline.edu/SCCStaff/.  To be included in the directory, all updates must be completed by October 5th.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

If you have questions, please contact Judy Yu at jyu@shoreline.edu

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE ON 160th ST.
Please be aware of the traffic jams that are bound to arise on 160th St. by Aurora Ave.  The street is scheduled for paving that may last 1 to 10 days.  There will be delays and general frustration with driving and parking.  You may have students who find it difficult to make their way to our campus because of the construction delays.  The campus will be updated as information is made available.

TRAVEL INFORMATION UPDATE
Effective October 1st, 2006, the state revised the maximum lodging rates for several Washington locations.  The state Per Diem Map reflects this change. The map is available on the Office of Financial Management's web site at: http://www.ofm.wa.gov/resources/travel.asp.
This link can also be found in the campus Travel Handbook. The campus Travel Handbook is being updated from it's testing server location and is located on the intranet under
departments, Administrative Services. (This is still a work in progress while the design and look are being updated).  Contact Ellen Pincus, X4501, epincus@shoreline.edu, if you have any questions.

NEW BOARD MEMBER APPOINTED BY GOVERNOR GREGOIRE
At the Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 27, it was announced that Roger Olstad, City Councilmember of Lake Forest Park, was appointed to the Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees.  Roger served on the Presidential Search Committee this past spring.  He replaces Jeff Lewis who attended his last Board meeting on Wednesday.  More information on our new trustee will be available in Net News.

NEW BLACKBOARD ACCOUNTS AND LOGIN PROCEDURE
We have just completed a project in which we "integrated" our Blackboard server with our central databases on campus – those in the HP 3000.  It means that Blackboard classrooms and accounts now are created automatically to reflect what is in the quarterly class schedule.  It also will be easier for anyone on campus to help a Blackboard student as all faculty and staff now have accounts on Blackboard and have the same login procedure, as outlined here:  http://www.shoreline.edu/distlearning17NewDirectionstoLogIn.html.  Contact Ann Garnsey-Harter, agarnsey@shoreline.edu in Distance Learning Services if you have questions.

SIGNAGE TO BE POSTED THIS WEEK
Many of you are finding the changes on our campus due to the PUB construction to be confusing.  New signage is being produced this week and will be posted as soon as possible.  A new "transitional" campus map will also be available soon.  Locations of dining facilities, vending machines, shuttle bus stops, hours of operations of the food carts, and more will be listed on this map.  Check the virtual PUB website for more information.  If you have suggestions regarding signage, please email Judy Yu at jyu@shoreline.edu .

ZERO ENERGY HOUSE UPDATE
Over the weekend the students from Washington State University rebuilt their entry into the 2005 Solar Decathlon, a 600 square foot structure that works "off the grid" (does not use electricity from the utility grid). This building has been dubbed the Zero Energy House.  The ZEH, located to the west of building 1700, is still under construction and currently looks like a giant styrofoam box.   Panels will be added to the sides; river rock will surround the building, and an access ramp will be built.  Stay tuned for additional information and be sure to attend the lecture on Monday, Sept. 25 by Mike Nelson, Director of the NW Solar Project, who will give a description of the ZEH and its history.

ANOTHER WORD ABOUT PARKING
Starting Tuesday of next week, all administrators have been asked to park in spaces at the Dept. of Transportation lot (160th St. and Dayton) in order to offset the loss in PUB lot spaces caused by the PUB construction..  Between 7:00 - 8:00 am, the shuttle bus will run from the campus to the DOT lot.  After 8:00 am, the Sears Parking lot will be added to this shuttle run.  Both the shuttle and van will operate during lunch hours making it easy to run to Central Market for lunch.  Shuttle transportation will be available until 6:00 pm.  Stay tuned for further developments or alternative transportation options.

DETOUR AROUND THE WEST SIDE OF THE 1000 BUILDING
The PUB contractors have moved the fencing around the PUB construction site.  The pathway between the PUB and the 1000 building is now blocked, and all foot traffic must now walk to the west of the 1000 building.  We apologize for the short notice on this.  Detour signs have been set up to guide this foot traffic, however, if you see any problems, please contact Randy Stegmeier at rstegmei@shoreline.edu .

PARKING LINES ADDED TO THE LOT BEHIND FOSS
New white lines have been added to the parking lot behind the FOSS Building.  All employees should take a few extra moments to ensure that you have parked your vehicle between the lines.  Let's use every inch of space in the parking lot wisely.

ANOTHER WORD ABOUT PARKING
Tuesday, September 26

JUST A REMINDER TO BE VIGILANT
Be on the lookout for scams to steal your identity.  One that has been reported is when someone calls pretending to be a court official who threateningly says a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn't show up for jury duty. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Just before 1:00 pm on Friday, September 8, the campus experienced a power outage caused by the demolition of the PUB.  Operations at the College were suspended for the afternoon and only essential staff remained on campus.  Please check your computers and other equipment that require power to ensure that everything is in order.  If you have questions about procedures related to suspended operations, you can download the current Suspended Operations memo.  Power has been restored and the campus, and it is "business as usual."
