MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES–BOARD EMAIL ACCOUNT
Please be advised that the Board of Trustees is discontinuing its campus email account.  This account was established two years ago during a crisis in leadership at the College.  The Board at that time felt it especially urgent that some means be provided to ensure that members of the campus community could communicate concerns directly to the Board, bypassing the usual administrative channels for such communications.  The email account was created for a specific purpose and was not intended to be permanent.  The account did in fact serve the important purpose for which it was created, and the Board appreciates having had the opportunity to hear the concerns of those who communicated with us during that difficult period.

Over the last year, however, now that relative calm has been restored to the institution, the email account has been rarely used by members of the campus community, perhaps once every two or three months.  A great deal of “spam” mail nonetheless accumulates on a daily basis, and one of us has had to monitor the account regularly to check for legitimate messages and clear out the unsolicited junk mail.  It is for this reason that we are now deactivating the account.

In so doing, the Board wishes the campus community to know that communications can still be addressed via regular or campus mail to the Board Chair and/or to the Secretary to the Board of Trustees, Lori Yonemitsu.  If marked “confidential,” such communications will be forwarded to the Board Chair without being opened by the Secretary.  The campus community should be aware, of course, that even confidential communications to the Board are subject to public disclosure under Washington’s Public Records Act.

As always, the Board also welcomes your attendance at our regular meetings at which we routinely provide an opportunity for public comment and participation.

As he unravels the mystery, the film provides us with an intimate look at a life of someone who cannot let go of powerful delusions. The film provides a thought provoking view of homelessness and mental illness. The film maker has noted that it is really a film about "finding tolerance and empathy."

ACCREDITATION VISIT
October 25-26, 2007

The college will be visited by Dr. Sonya Christian from Lane Community College and Dr. Galyn Carlile from Rogue Community College on Thursday and Friday of this week. Dr. Christian and Dr. Carlile are evaluators for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. They are here to evaluate our progress in addressing the recommendations we received since our accreditation visits in 2002 and 2004. This visit is a required five year regular interim report to the Commission. We have prepared a set of documents in response to their visit. See: http://intranet.shoreline.edu/accreditation/

Our report details our progress with the Commission’s recommendations and substantive changes in specific areas of the nine standards that comprise the accreditation criteria and process as outlined in the accreditation handbook. In addition to the cited report, we have prepared a number of exhibits that help our evaluators understand specific activities and actions at a more granular level. These exhibits are not on our accreditation web site because of their sheer numbers.

I hope you will take a few minutes to look over our Five Year Interim Report as it can give you at least a snapshot of this college’s work in the past five years. Our evaluators have set up schedule of meetings with various groups and individuals to discuss specific pieces of the report. After they are finished with their interviews and preliminary findings, they will return to their respective colleges and work on a finished recommendation to the Commission which will then take a formal vote related to our accreditation status. This vote usually occurs two or three months after the visit.

Special thanks to Deans Goldstein and Moran for their leadership and efforts in creating the report and the exhibits.
