President Holly Moore is attending the monthly statewide presidents meeting
October 28 & 29 , to be held at Tacoma CC Thursday and Friday. While she is
off campus, VP Carol Henderson has been designated as
Administrator-in-Charge. Carol can be reached at ext. 4651.
UPDATE ON CONSTRUCTION:
TRAFFIC BACKUPS
October 28 & 29
The contractor for the campus water main project will be doing paving work
on various roadways and parking lots on Thursday and Friday (October 28 &
29). This will cause some traffic and parking problems, but most should be
of short duration. Those who are affected by the smell of asphalt fumes
should also be aware of this work. If you have questions, contact
Randy Stegmeier at

SUSPENDED OPERATIONS MEMO
As we move into our winter season, President Holly Moore has issued the
annual reminder about Suspended Operations. Suspending operations for all
or part of a day is not a decision that is made lightly. Every effort will
be made to ascertain the weather conditions and the impacts to the safety of
our students and employees. Communications regarding suspended operations
will be issued promptly by the Public Information Office using our email,
website, and voicemail systems. Additional information will be issued to
the media via the Puget Sound Emergency Communications Systems website.
Please review the posted memo for
additional information plus procedures for reporting employee absences
during the time of suspended operations. This information will be
permanently posted to the DAAG homepage during the winter.
LEADERS IN THE CLASSROOM
AND THE BIG EVENT
Wednesday, November 10 from 8:30 - 9:20 am in the Campus Theater
Leslie Jones, former regional vice president for Qwest Communications, kicks
off the BIG Event (Business Information Gathering). The BIG Event is
sponsored by the Business Advisory Committee and faculty. Students
will be introduced to advisors in this area and have the opportunity to
discuss their academic and career goals. All students are invited to
attend!
At the time of her retirement
in 2002, Leslie provided leadership and direction for a 14-state area
including 10 Regional Inbound Consumer Call Centers employing approximately
2000 union-represented employees and 150 management employees. Leslie will
share her thoughts on how to look for opportunities to climb the corporate
ladder.
BOARD MEETING RECAP
The Board of Trustees held their regularly scheduled meeting on October 27,
2004. Highlights from the meeting include: a presentation by faculty
involved with the 2004 Summer Institutes to Jamaica, Peru, and China; report
on a summer teaching contract to the First Nations of Canada by Speech
Language Pathology Assistants faculty, report by Dr. Henderson and faculty
who attended the AACC conference in China this summer; reports from Vice
Presidents on the operations of the College, reports from the SCC
Federation, Classified Staff, and the Student Body Association.
The
Board held elections for this year’s officers of the Board. This year’s
officers will include: Elsa Welch, President; Jeff Lewis, Vice President;
Michele Foley, Secretary to the Board. A complete set of minutes from
this meeting will be posted to the website once they have been approved by
the Board. Information from this meeting will also be presented in Net
News.
OPEN FORUMS FOR VPHR
Tuesday November 2, TBD, 1000 Building, Board Room
Open Forums for the interview candidates for the Vice President for Human
Resources will be held. All interviews will take place in the Board Room of
the Administration Building. We encourage everyone to attend. Please
remember to bring any questions you would like to ask each candidate. Each
interview should last approximately 45 minutes. Names of candidates and
interview times will be posted on Day at a Glance the morning of November
2nd.
CLOSURE AT CASHIERS OFFICE
Monday - Wednesday, November 8, 9 and 10th
Due to the remodel/recarpetting in the 5000 Building, the Cashier's Office will be open 8:00 am to 4:30 pm on November 8, 9 and 10th. We will resume the normal business hours of 8:00 am - 6:30 pm the week of November 15th.

In and out of state university admission representatives provide
information and answers to unique and complicated admission requirements for
Shoreline international students. In addition, university representatives
may have some information available for domestic students as well.
GET OUT AND VOTE
Monday, November 1, 8am-1pm, Pagoda Union Building
On Monday November 1, the Student Body Association will be holding a Get out
and Vote celebration. It will take place inside the Pagoda Union Building
from eight AM until one PM. The End, a local radio station, will be parked
in front of the Pagoda Building helping to promote voting as well to give
away free prizes to students. Campaign Representatives will be present and
speaking at the celebration. The Hip-Hop club will be holding an open MC.
The Black Student Union will be performing skits and the Film club will be
showing shorts films. The Rainbow Club, Action 4 Change, the Worldly
Philosopher's Club, and other campus groups and individuals are also
planning tables, workshops and events. Our main goal is to have as many
participating clubs as active as possible sharing on policies and
initiatives that directly affect students at large. We would greatly
appreciate your assistance in promoting the e!

After 27 continuous years of attending classes on campus Mike Dahlager is
leaving us to move to California. Mike started here in 1977. He finally
received his Associate in Arts and Sciences degree in 2000. Please come and
wish him well, and see him get his well deserved Dolphie award!

This special Music Department concert showcases our Choral, Funkngroove,
Bluegrass, and Jazz Band groups with more great music from classical to pop.

Former Director of Admissions and Registration Willamay Pym died Wednesday,
October 13th at the age of 87. In 1963, Willamay became the first Registrar
at Shoreline Community College, a position she held until she retired in
1978. Willamay returned to SCC to volunteer as a conversation tutor in the
Essential Skills Program in January, 2003.

Monday, November 1, 8am-1pm, Pagoda Union Building
On Monday November 1, the Student Body Association will be holding a Get out
and Vote celebration. It will take place inside the Pagoda Union Building
from eight AM until one PM. The End, a local radio station, will be parked
in front of the Pagoda Building helping to promote voting as well to give
away free prizes to students. Campaign Representatives will be present and
speaking at the celebration. The Hip-Hop club will be holding an open MC.
The Black Student Union will be performing skits and the Film club will be
showing shorts films. The Rainbow Club, Action 4 Change, the Worldly
Philosopher's Club, and other campus groups and individuals are also
planning tables, workshops and events. Our main goal is to have as many
participating clubs as active as possible sharing on policies and
initiatives that directly affect students at large. We would greatly

Well folks, it is that time again. The children from the Parent-Child Center
will be putting on their costumes and parading around campus. We know that
the 26th is a little early to trick-or-treat, but due to other events at the
PCC, we are just going to start dressing up early. If you would like the

NINOTCHKA ROSCA - "Women
and War"

Ninotchka Rosca is the Philippine’s pre-eminent novelist, author of five
books and recipient of the 1993 American Book Award for Excellence in
Literature. A political prisoner under the Marcos regime, Rosca is on the
board of the Survivors Committee, a network of former political prisoners
and human rights activists. Rosca is the founding chair of GABRIELA Network,
a Philippine-U.S. women’s solidarity organization working against the
trafficking of women, including the mail-order bride industry, the colonial
imposition of prostitution on Third World women and the role of the IMF/World
Bank/WTO in creating a global sex trade. She is currently the international
spokesperson for the Purple Rose Campaign Against the Sex Trafficking of
Filipinas and Filipino children. General admission is $10, $8 for seniors,
students, SCC faculty and staff, and $4 for SCC students with College ID and
children 14 and younger.

Field and Gymnasium
Monday October 25 is Triple-Header Monday for the Athletic Department. At
2:00 and 4:00 Shoreline will host Olympic in soccer. The women's game is at
2:00 followed by the men's game at 4:00. Then at 7:00pm, the women's
volleyball team will take on north-end rival Edmonds. All three teams are
very competitive and fun to watch. The volleyball team has already secured
a spot in the NWAACC Championship tournament. Come out and support your
Dolphins. Admission is free for all students and campus employees.

Peruvian Amazon, Don McVay (Emeritus Biology and Zoology Professor) and his
wife Sandi will share photos of their recent adventures. The McVays’

the large Macaws (Scarlet, Red and Green, and Yellow and Blue) at

ARTSTOR: THOUSANDS OF
IMAGES FOR INSTRUCTIONAL USE

ARTstor is a non-profit initiative, founded by The Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation, with a mission to use digital technology to enhance scholarship,
teaching and learning in the arts and associated fields. Their aim is to
assemble image collections from across many time periods and cultures that
will, in the aggregate, have sufficient depth, breadth, and coherence to
support a wide range of educational and scholarly activities. The collection
includes a repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images drawn from
different sources, such as museums, archaeological teams, photo archives,
slide collections, and art reference publishers. Most importantly, the tools
to actively use those images are included in the database. Instructors from
a wide variety of disciplines will find this a most valuable resource.

FACULTY CONTRACT IS NOW RATIFIED
At a special meeting of the Board of Trustees on
Monday, October 18, 2004, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to ratify
the contract between the Board and the Shoreline Community College
Federation of Teachers, Local 1950, AFT WA/AFT/AFL-CIO, effective July 1,
2004, through June 30, 2007.
Paul Burton, chair of the Board of Trustees, commented that he was
particularly pleased with the increased allocations for training for
faculty, noting that learning is lifelong. He thanked the members of both
negotiations teams for their fine work.
President Holly Moore and VP Carol Henderson thanked the faculty members on the
negotiations team who were in attendance, Karen Kreutzer and Donna Wilde.
In addition, Ken LaFountaine, past president of the Federation and a member of
the negotiations team was recognized for his
service on an issues team for this contract.

The Clothesline Project is an interactive art display designed to promote
awareness around issues of domestic violence. People who have experienced
domestic violence, and those who care about them, hang shirts that they have
decorated to speak to their individual experiences. Shirts then become part
of a permanent collection, each new year of shirts adding on to the last.

2004 REGIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY SEATTLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
October 20-22, Vancouver, BC
At the request of the State Board,
President Holly Moore and Sr. Executive Kae Peterson will travel to
Vancouver to participate in the 2004 Regional Leadership Conference
sponsored by the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. This conference will focus on
the collaboration and partnerships needed to make the four-county region
more conducive to economic vitality and a high quality of life.
The conference will examine the most important driver of the future economy:
the "research industry." Leaders will review the public policies and civic
activities needed to maintain the research base currently in the region and
what is needed to expand this sector. Education is a critical factor in the
model to attract research investments to this region. More information will
be available in Net News. Trustee Jeff Lewis will also attend the
conference on behalf of Shoreline Bank.

ARTstor is a non-profit initiative, founded by The Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation, with a mission to use digital technology to enhance scholarship,
teaching and learning in the arts and associated fields. Their aim is to
assemble image collections from across many time periods and cultures that
will, in the aggregate, have sufficient depth, breadth, and coherence to
support a wide range of educational and scholarly activities. The collection
includes a repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images drawn from
different sources, such as museums, archaeological teams, photo archives,
slide collections, and art reference publishers. Most importantly, the tools
to actively use those images are included in the database. Instructors from
a wide variety of disciplines will find this a most valuable resource.

FACULTY CONTRACT IS NOW RATIFIED
At a special meeting of the Board of Trustees on
Monday, October 18, 2004, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to ratify
the contract between the Board and the Shoreline Community College
Federation of Teachers, Local 1950, AFT WA/AFT/AFL-CIO, effective July 1,
2004, through June 30, 2007.
Paul Burton, chair of the Board of Trustees, commented that he was
particularly pleased with the increased allocations for training for
faculty, noting that learning is lifelong. He thanked the members of both
negotiations teams for their fine work.
President Holly Moore and VP Carol Henderson thanked the faculty members on the
negotiations team who were in attendance, Karen Kreutzer and Donna Wilde.
In addition, Ken LaFountaine, past president of the Federation and a member of
the negotiations team was recognized for his
service on an issues team for this contract.

CENTER'S COSTUME WALK

Well folks, it is that time again. The children from the Parent-Child Center
will be putting on their costumes and parading around campus. We know that
the 26th is a little early to trick-or-treat, but due to other events at the
PCC we are just going to start dressing up early. If you would like the
children to come by so you can see them just let us know. Please email

so we can plan our route. If you would like to have treats for the kids
please make sure it is nothing homemade. There will be about 80 children
from four months to six years old.

SCC COMBINED FUND DRIVE CAMPAIGN IS IN MOTION
The Combined Fund Drive allows
Washington State employees and public agency retirees to improve their
world, their state and their communities by making it easier for them to
support charitable organizations. Employees may ask for a one-time
only or regular paycheck withdrawal to be made and send to the agency of
their choice. Donations may also be sent directly to an agency.
This Campaign, in its 20th year, is one of the largest in the country.

2004 REGIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY SEATTLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
October 20-22, Vancouver, BC
At the request of the State Board,
President Holly Moore and Sr. Executive Kae Peterson will travel to
Vancouver to participate in the 2004 Regional Leadership Conference
sponsored by the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. This conference will focus on
the collaboration and partnerships needed to make the four-county region
more conducive to economic vitality and a high quality of life.
The conference will examine the most important driver of the future economy:
the "research industry." Leaders will review the public policies and civic
activities needed to maintain the research base currently in the region and
what is needed to expand this sector. Education is a critical factor in the
model to attract research investments to this region. More information will
be available in Net News. Trustee Jeff Lewis will also attend the
conference on behalf of Shoreline Bank.
ADMINISTRATOR-IN-CHARGE
Vice President Carol Henderson will serve as Administrator-in-Charge today
beginning at noon. Henderson can be reached at ext. 4651. Vice President Beverly
Brandt will assume the A-I-C responsibilities on Thursday, October 21, and

WATER SHUT OFF NOTICE
On Wednesday (October 20, 2004), the water service for the 1700 and 1800
classroom buildings and the Library (4000 Building) will be shut off for
about one hour from 2:00-3:00 p.m. This shut-off is required as part of the
ongoing construction work on the campus water main. Please make note
of the locations and time of the shut-off, so you can make alternative
arrangements for restroom use during this time period. Thank you for
your patience and cooperation during this construction period
JAPANESE CULTURAL FESTIVAL

The annual Japanese Cultural Festive put on by the HTC Japan Hotel School students
will be held tomorrow in the PUB Canteen. Come and join us and learn how to make your favorite origami shape, play a Japanese game, get your name drawn by students
artists in Japanese calligraphy to take home with you. Those are just a few things you can do at the festival. Bring your office mates, your students, or just come alone and make a friend.

CLOTHESLINE PROJECT

The Clothesline Project is an interactive art display designed to promote
awareness around issues of domestic violence. People who have experienced
domestic violence, and those who care about them, hang shirts that they have
decorated to speak to their individual experiences. Shirts then become part
of a permanent collection, each new year of shirts adding on to the last.
