Michele Davis has generously brought some wonderful examples of Halloween decorations which are on display on the main level of the Library Technology Building. The Halloween decorations displayed include noisemakers, candy containers, and children's costumes, date from the 1940’s and 1950’s. Some were made in Germany, and others in the U.S. Celebrate Halloween by seeing the display and picking up some treats at the Reference/Information counter!

PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT WORKSHOP
Friday, October 31 at 1:00 pm in Room 1102
Dr. Tom Flint will lead the workshop that is promised to be "very learner- centered" focusing on the needs of the adult learner. Faculty and staff should find it very useful and informative. Although the workshop agenda
(see attached) indicates that it will last until 3:30PM or so, a lot will depend on what faculty and staff who attend this event want to do.

WORK BY CENTER FOR MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE IS HIGHLIGHTED AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE
In October 2003, the National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education (NSF/ATE) and the National Tech Prep Network partnered to offer the first national conference where ATE and Tech Prep collaborations were recognized. The CME is one of 550 projects that NSF/ATE supports. All participants submitted documentation regarding their partnerships with Tech Prep. The CME also submitted information about their collaboration with the Manufacturing Technology Advisory Group (MTAG) curriculum project, and Mathematics Engineering Sciences Achievement (MESA). Sixteen participants were invited to showcase their projects at the four day conference in Nashville. SCC's CME program was highlighted.

Wednesday, Nov. 5, beginning at 12pm in Building 1000, Boardroom
Walden University is accredited by the North Central Association and has been named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation's “best online graduate schools.” Beginning this fall, Walden is offering a Ph.D. Program in Community College Leadership led by Dr. Terry O'Banion, the program's director. You may recognize Dr. O'Banion as the president emeritus of the League for Innovation and one of the nation's leading community college educators.

DEPRESSION SCREENING AT SHORELINE
Tuesday, November 4, 2003 from 10:30 am-1:00 pm in the PUB & Advising & Counseling Center
Visit the PUB table to learn more about depression and other mood disorders. Educational brochures and video will be available. In addition, students can go to Advising and Counseling to participate in free screening for depression, bipolar, post-traumatic stress, and general anxiety disorders; and discuss results with counseling faculty.

DOLPHIE AWARD, STAR OF THE MONTH, and MORE
At the Opening Week campus meeting, President Moore announced that a Dolphie Award will be given each quarter to those individuals who demonstrate "the spirit of the Dolphin." Nominations should be be made via the KUDO's form on Day At A Glance (see button above). These nominations will be reviewed and awards given before the end of the quarter. All nominations are due by November 25th in order to be considered for Fall Quarter.

COSTCO PURCHASES NOW POSSIBLE
In addition to a Sam's Club Membership Card, the Purchasing Office now has a Costco Membership Card (business membership card/credit card all in one) available for those divisions wanting to make purchases at either of the local wholesalers. All that is required to check out either card is an approved purchase requisition sent to the Finance & Budgeting Office (Bldg. 1200). Once the purchase req. has been approved by the Budget Analyst it will be forwarded to the Purchasing Office who will contact the Division with availability of each card.

PARENT CHILD CENTER CELEBRATES NEW KITCHEN
Approximately 40 kids, their parents, grandparents and siblings, faculty, staff and administrators celebrated the Parent Child Center's new kitchen facility at a dedication and spaghetti feed on October 21st.

The Shoreline Community College 2004 Winter Credit Class Schedule and the Continuing Ed (non-credit) schedule is now available
online. Online registration opens today for distance education classes and on November 17th for early registration. Paper schedules will be delivered to campus next Monday, Nov. 3rd. Please let your students know that it is time to think about next quarter.

U.S. MAIL DELIVERY AND PICKUP SCHEDULE
U.S. Mail is picked up from and delivered to the U.S. Post Office each morning around 9am. Outgoing US Mail needs to be in the mail room by 8:15am in order to be processed for the 9am delivery. Please allow extra time for US Mail requiring special handling. Incoming US Mail is usually sorted and in the mailboxes by 11am.

Copies of the 2003-2004 Shoreline Community College Budget are available in the office of the VP of Administrative Services, Room 1009.  Information regarding Projected Sources of Funds and Operating Expenses is clearly delineated in this report.  The campus is most welcome to review this information and/or to contact President Holly Moore directly.

CEO PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD
The Career Education Options (CEO) Program at Shoreline Community College (SCC) has been named one of the best dropout prevention programs in the nation. The Crystal Star Program Award of Excellence in Dropout Recovery, Intervention and Prevention was awarded to SCC by the National Dropout Prevention Network (NDPN) for their success at helping at-risk, out of school youth stay in school and improving their employment opportunities. The NDPN is a national clearinghouse on issues related to dropout prevention and provides strategies designed to increase the graduation rate in schools across the nation. SCC will receive the award at the national NDPN conference in Kansas City in October, 2003. >MORE

BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
Trustee Paul Burton will serve as 2003-04 Chair of the Board and Elsa Welch will serve as Board Vice-Chair, results of Trustee elections held at the October 22 Board meeting.  New Board member, Jeffrey Lewis, appointed just this month, attended his first meeting. VP Carol Henderson welcomed NBBJ architect rep Liz Jacks, who presented pre-design concepts for the proposed Health Occupations & Sciences Building. New Policy 4124, "Security Policy for IT Resources," and updates to Policy 4727, "Shared Leave," were approved, which brings Shoreline into compliance for both. Highlighting the evening was an Enrollment and Marketing presentation by Judy Yu and Andrea Rye, followed by an Advising and Counseling update coordinated by Yvonne Terrell-Powell, Kim Thompson, and Jeff Omalanz-Hood. Chair Edith Loyer Nelson remarked, "It was a good meeting with so many new faces and so much interesting information."

RECENT E-MAIL AND NETWORK TROUBLES
Inbound e-mail was delayed and access to e-mail via the web was sporadic on Tuesday due to server instability. TSS staff traced the problem to the SPAM filter software on the bridgehead mail server. The SPAM filtering software has been removed pending a patch from the manufacturer. Many campus users experienced slow booting and problems accessing the Internet Wednesday morning. The problem was traced to a rogue server in a employee's office that was handing out bogus Internet addresses.

Discussion will also include recruiting mentors to participate in the new Diversity Transfer Program sponsored by the Student Development Center and The Multicultural/Diversity Education Center, possible mentors for new faculty and staff, and participation in screening/hiring committees. POWER OUTTAGE LAST EVENING: CHECK YOUR COMPUTERS, CLOCKS AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Last night from approximately 5:35 - 6:30 pm, the city of Shoreline and the College experienced a power outtage forcing the cancellation of all evening classes and events (other than the Prism Concert). You may need to re-set clocks and other electronic devices. Please call the TSS helpline if you experience any problems with your computers. (Please note that we will "fall back" to Pacific Standard time, so clocks will need to be re-set in any event.)

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
A new ORANGE Emergency Procedures booklet will be distributed to all employees in the next week. Please post this booklet in a visible spot in your offices so that you can find it should you need it. Also, take a moment to refresh yourselves on the procedures. This
information is also posted on the DAAG page (look to your left)

Please note that should you need to evacuate your buildings, you should move to the nearest parking lot. Go towards the perimeter of campus - NOT the center of campus (i.e. the Courtyard.) Take part in a campus-wide discussion of the finer points of what students told us in the 2001 Noel-Levitz student satisfaction survey.  Come and hear about an informal analysis carried out by a subcommittee of Student Success, looking at responses made to some key items by particular ethnic groups, programs, etc.  Some of the patterns suggest possible follow-up explorations:  let's talk about following up!   Facilitated by Alexandra Hepburn (FACES Project) and Bruce McCutcheon (ESL).

Discussion will also include recruiting mentors to participate in the new Diversity Transfer Program sponsored by the Student Development Center and The Multicultural/Diversity Education Center, possible mentors for new faculty and staff, and participation in screening/hiring committees. Come join us and include yor voice in the brainstorm of ideas for recruitment of new members and planning social events for the remainder of the '03-'04.

BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
Trustee Paul Burton will serve as 2003-04 Chair of the Board and Elsa Welch will serve as Board Vice-Chair, results of Trustee elections held at last evening's meeting. New Board member, Jeffrey Lewis, appointed just this month, attended his first meeting. VP Carol Henderson welcomed NBBJ architect rep Liz Jacks, who presented pre-design concepts for the proposed Health Occupations & Sciences Building. New Policy 4124, "Security Policy for IT Resources," and updates to Policy 4727, "Shared Leave," were approved, which brings Shoreline into compliance for both. Highlighting the evening was an Enrollment and Marketing presentation by Judy Yu and Andrea Rye, followed by an Advising and Counseling update coordinated by Yvonne Terrell-Powell. Chair Edith Loyer Nelson remarked, "It was a good meeting with so many new faces and so much interesting information."

CEO PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD
The Career Education Options (CEO) Program at Shoreline Community College (SCC) has been named one of the best dropout prevention programs in the nation. The Crystal Star Program Award of Excellence in Dropout Recovery, Intervention and Prevention was awarded to SCC by the National Dropout Prevention Network (NDPN) for their success at helping at-risk, out of school youth stay in school and improving their employment opportunities. The NDPN is a national clearinghouse on issues related to dropout prevention and provides strategies designed to increase the graduation rate in schools across the nation. SCC will receive the award at the national NDPN conference in Kansas City in October, 2003.

RECENT E-MAIL AND NETWORK TROUBLES
Inbound e-mail was delayed and access to e-mail via the web was sporadic on Tuesday due to server instability. TSS staff traced the problem to the SPAM filter software on the bridgehead mail server. The SPAM filtering software has been removed pending a patch from the manufacturer. Many campus users experienced slow booting and problems accessing the Internet Wednesday morning. The problem was traced to a rogue server in a employee's office that was handing out bogus Internet addresses.

RIDESHARE WEEKS, OCTOBER 13-24
This is the final week for Rideshare and a great time to try out carpooling or transit as an option to driving alone every day. Each work day morning, the state's Commute Trip Reduction Program removes approximately 17,000 vehicles from our state's roads. This saves space on the roads and reduces air pollution (by about 5,000 tons each year) and gasoline consumption (by 6 million gallons a year).

Phyllis Henrichsen, under the auspices of Visiting Nurse Service of the Northwest, will be giving flu shots for the price of $20.00. She will also have some pneumonia vaccination available at $30.00 and tetanus vaccination at $40.00.

RIDESHARE WEEKS, OCTOBER 13-24
This is the final week for Rideshare and a great time to try out carpooling or transit as an option to driving alone every day. Each work day morning, the state's Commute Trip Reduction Program removes approximately 17,000 vehicles from our state's roads. This saves space on the roads and reduces air pollution (by about 5,000 tons each year) and gasoline consumption (by 6 million gallons a year).

Take part in a campus-wide discussion of the finer points of what students told us in the 2001 Noel-Levitz student satisfaction survey.  Come and hear about an informal analysis carried out by a subcommittee of Student Success, looking at responses made to some key items by particular ethnic groups, programs, etc.  Some of the patterns suggest possible follow-up explorations:  let's talk about following up!   Facilitated by Alexandra Hepburn (FACES Project) and Bruce McCutcheon (ESL).

The Assessment Response Team members are trying new ways of assessing their students' learning of Gen Ed Outcomes (GEOs) this quarter.  Come see their projects and consider ways you can build new assignments to measure GEO learning by your students.   You'll also hear about the project for assessing critical thinking using WSU's Critical Thinking Scoring Guide.  Facilitated by Pam Dusenberry (Campus Assessment Coordinator).

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
A new ORANGE Emergency Procedures booklet will be distributed to all employees in the next week. Please post this booklet in a visible spot in your offices so that you can find it should you need it. Also, take a moment to refresh yourselves on the procedures. This

RECENT E-MAIL AND NETWORK TROUBLES
Inbound e-mail was delayed and access to e-mail via the web was sporadic on Tuesday due to server instability. TSS staff traced the problem to the SPAM filter software on the bridgehead mail server. The SPAM filtering software has been removed pending a patch from the manufacturer. Many campus users experienced slow booting and problems accessing the Internet Wednesday morning. The problem was traced to a rogue server in a employee's office that was handing out bogus Internet addresses.

CLUB ADVISOR TRAINING

A makeup workshop for advisors of student clubs and organizations will be offered on Friday, October 24th from 1:30-3:00 pm in the Board Room of Building #1000. Training topics will include how to monitor budget balances, how to use the new Club Advisor Manual, and Constitutional requirements for requesting budget allocations and promoting events. THE THREE C's: CONFLICT, CHANGE, COMMUNICATION

The human side of functioning on the job is often difficult. Change and stress can create workplace conflict & communication problems.
