CENTRAL AMERICA AND THE NEW
FREE TRADE AGREEMENT: POTENTIAL IMPACTS
Friday, November 19 at 1:30 - 3:30 pm in the Canteen
The Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) currently awaits
Congressional approval. While many have raised concerns about its labor and
environmental impacts, few are aware of its implications in terms of access
to health. Results of a recent research trip to Guatemala to examine the
ways CAFTA will likely affect access to medications in the region will be
presented. Guatemala presents a good test case for this broader issue,
because in their eagerness to curry favor with the US, the government has
already written the IP restrictions in CAFTA into national law, so the
restricted access to medications that many forecast for the entire region is
already taking shape even though CAFTA has yet to be ratified. You can
read
a brief article online.
A question/answer/discussion period will follow the lecture.Presented by Associate Professor Angelina Godoy, Ph.D., UW Jackson School of
International Studies - Law
