SYSTEM MAINTENANCE NOTICE
Friday, June 1, between 3:00pm and 5:00pm
The battery backup system (UPS) for the campus server room will undergo its
semi-annual maintenance this Friday, 6/1/2007, between 3:00 and 5:00 PM. No
system downtime is expected, but during this time the server room will be
running solely on utility power, with no battery backup. In the unlikely
event of a power failure in the Library, some transient data could be lost.

diverse composers as Palestrina, Mozart, Barber, Pablo

VOYAGE À PARIS
Thursday, June 14, 7:30pm - SCC Theatre
Voice faculty members Catherine Treadgold and Dr. Charles Enlow will present Voyage à Paris, a concert of French songs and solo piano music. The program includes three song cycles: Chansons de Bilitis by Claude Debussy, Shéhérazade by Maurice Ravel, and Banalités by Francis Poulenc. Soprano Kate Krueger, Catherine’s student who will be attending the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins next year, will join her for two duets by Gabriel Fauré. In addition, Dr. Enlow will perform works for solo piano by Fauré, Ravel and Poulenc.

Bonnie Madison has organized a closet swap (for women and men) to help all
faculty, staff and administrators share their gently used clothing items
with their friends and colleagues. Please bring your clothing, shoes and
accessories to Room 5302 in the FOSS Building at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June
11th. The actual swap will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Please let students
know that they are invited to come by and pick up items. All items
remaining at the end of the swap will be delivered to local women's

REQUEST FOR CORE COURSE DISCIPLINE EXPERTS
The Curriculum Committee has been working on a process for implementing the
approved core course criteria for Quantitative/Symbolic Reasoning,
Multicultural Understanding, and Communication. As part of the review
process for any proposed core course the Curriculum Committee would like to
have input from colleagues with expertise in each of these areas. If you
are interested in becoming a discipline expert for any of these three areas,
please email your name and short description outlining your qualifications
to John Backes in the Office of Instruction by the end of the Spring Quarter
(June 15th). For additional information about what this responsibility
would entail, please feel free to contact Don Christensen or Susan Hoyne.

This memo is intended to discuss reductions in faculty and staff positions
and requests for information related to part-time hourly staff. In an
effort to reduce the College’s budget in response to declining enrollment,
the College went through a process of budget reduction that has affected all
sections of the campus. All employee positions, including classified staff,
full and part-time regular, and hourly, administrative employees, full,
part-time, and temporary; and faculty, tenured, tenure track, and associate,
were reviewed with regards to criteria established by the President’s
Leadership Team and the Budget Committee.

BRIGHT
Last Friday, a draft of the new Strategic
Plan was presented in an all-campus meeting. Thank you to all of you who
attended! The meeting featured a review of the process so far, a statement
about the mission and vision by President Lambert, a presentation of the 8
themes, a brief update on the Budget process, and what the steps are in the
strategic planning process.
The
Strategic Planning Group is grateful for the terrific participation of
members of the college community have given us in the creation of the
new plan and we hope that all
members of the campus community will use the following link to
peruse the current draft of the new plan.

that the questions, comments and/or concerns be sent by email to Diana
Knauf, Strategic Planning chair.
dknauf@shoreline.edu Diana will share them with the Strategic
Planning group as we solidify the document. Comments need to be received

BOOKSTORE
Spirit Day Apparel sales begin on Tuesday, May 29 and
will continue through June 15. This is your opportunity to purchase
apparel to wear on the
inaugural Spirit Day during Opening Week.
The apparel is to help us feel connected and proud to be at Shoreline. It
is also an opportunity to support the building of a Classified Training
Endowment through the SCC Foundation. A portion of the proceeds will go to
this support this effort.
Some samples will be available to help you determine size and color. Orders
can be placed at the Information Desk in the Bookstore beginning May 29.

The Red Wagon will be relocating from outside the library to the front of
the 2200 Bldg, the same location as last summer. This move will happen in
the next week or so.

interested in event organizing, conducting tours for prospective students,

CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW TENURED FACULTY MEMBER
STEPHEN MCCLOSKEY
At
the Board of Trustees meeting on May 23rd, Business Division faculty member
Stephen McCloskey was granted tenure. BOT Chair Gidget Terpstra
mentioned that Professor McCloskey's resume and summary of qualifications
are among the finest they have ever seen. "We are fortunate to
have Professor McCloskey at SCC," said Terpstra. Congrats,
Steve!
STUDENT GOVERNMENT HIRING
The Vice President and Secretary positions in the Student Government are
reopened. Please help us publicize this by letting your students know that
these positions are available. The pay is $11.11/ hour and they will also
receive a free staff parking pass.
The applications are available in the library and room 2935, and the last

BORYEONG DELEGATION VISITS SHORELINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Wednesday, May 30 at 6:00 pm in the Automotive Showroom
A delegation from Boryeong, South Korea,
the City of Shoreline's sister city, will attend a community reception
hosted by the College. Last November, VP Stuart Trippel and
International Programs Colleen Ferguson traveled with city officials, local
educational and business leaders and members of the Shoreline Sister Cities
Association as guests of the City of Boryeong and exchanged a Memorandum of
Understanding with Ajou Motor College. The MOU supports the exchange
of students in both long-term- and short-term programs.

biggest boost from the sun." Mike Nelson stood
in his new office, where walls of corrugated metal clash
just a tad with silky-smooth floors and walls of
sustainably harvested eucalyptus. "Very soon, the old
ways are going," Nelson, director of the Northwest Solar
Center, told visitors this week. "The old ways are
dying."

FOOD LIFELINE ON SATURDAY
This
is a group photo taken this past Saturday at Food Lifeline when a group of
18 international students from SCC who volunteered 4 hours
to re-pack gathered food from National Letter Carrier’s Food Drive a week
before.
NALC Food drive gathered 340,000 lbs. of canned and dry food over the
weekend of May 12th (some households received a blue plastic bag collected
by mail carriers). Many volunteers this past week including our students
sorted and repacked 12,036 lbs. which will be distributed to food banks,
missions and meal programs within Western Washington region to serve 10,107
meals!

FOOD LIFELINE ON SATURDAY
This
is a group photo taken this past Saturday at Food Lifeline when a group of
18 international students from SCC who volunteered 4 hours
to re-pack gathered food from National Letter Carrier’s Food Drive a week
before.
NALC Food drive gathered 340,000 lbs. of canned and dry food over the
weekend of May 12th (some households received a blue plastic bag collected
by mail carriers). Many volunteers this past week including our students
sorted and repacked 12,036 lbs. which will be distributed to food banks,
missions and meal programs within Western Washington region to serve 10,107
meals!

setting longterm goals, and how to maintain one's aspirations while
completing academic requirements.
Jeremy Vasquez
President and Co-Founder of A.L.M.A. (Americanos Latinos en Medicina
Ayudando), an organization that strives to address healthcare needs of
underrepresented communities locally and globally, particularly in Latin
American countries. Former SCC student, currently attends UW as a Cell &
Molecular Biology major, and works as a Research Scientist at Harborview
Medical Center. Will provide information about A.L.M.A. along with ideas of
possible careers in medicine such as research, healthcare management, and

According to the College policies, renaming a building requires at least
a 51% majority vote of students and staff. In the elections conducted last
week, two names are being forwarded for a "run off" election. Please cast
your vote for the naming of the new student union building: Pagoda Union
Building (PUB) or Path of Diversity (POD).

On Thursday, we celebrated the dedication of the Washington State
University/Shoreline Community College Zero Energy House. The sun was
with us, and everyone enjoyed meeting our new house. I want to thank
everyone who put in long hours to ready the ZEH for this day. It was
an unbelievable effort that could not have happened without the dedication
of everyone to just "get it done." More information and photos will be

BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETING
On May 16th
the Budget Committee met with Vice President Backes and Interim Vice
Presidents Rye, Trippel and Vonnegut to review the college budget for 2007/8
before it was presented to the Board. Stuart Trippel opened the review by
summarizing some of the impacts on the budget made by the Legislature this

immigrant populations. Currently completing her Pediatric Residency at
Children's Hosptial in Seattle, and recieved her medical degree at Johns
Hopkins. Will give helpful hints on building a competitive application,
setting longterm goals, and how to maintain one's aspirations while
completing academic requirements.
Jeremy Vasquez
President and Co-Founder of A.L.M.A. (Americanos Latinos en Medicina
Ayudando), an organization that strives to address healthcare needs of
underrepresented communities locally and globally, particularly in Latin
American countries. Former SCC student, currently attends UW as a Cell &
Molecular Biology major, and works as a Research Scientist at Harborview
Medical Center. Will provide information about A.L.M.A. along with ideas of
possible careers in medicine such as research, healthcare management, and

Community & Technical Colleges) Partnerships for Success Continuing

STARBUCKS BIKE TO WORK DAY
Friday, May 18, 6-9am
In honor of Bike to Work Day on May 18th, a bike station will be located at
Shoreline's Interurban Trail at N. 175th and Midvale Avenue North from 6 to
9 a.m. The station will feature free snacks and refreshments, water
bottles, maps and information about commuting by bike plus riders can have
their bikes checked out by bike mechanics. SCC will have a
refreshments table for riders from 7 - 9:30 a.m. in the courtyard to support
this citywide event.
GLOBAL EYES: CAMBODIA

During their sabbatical leave, Donna Biscay and Bruce McCutcheon visited
Cambodia and did teacher training with Cambodian teachers of English. They
have brought back photos and teacher-training materials they developed. See
some of their photos and find out how this experience help them re-examine
their beliefs about and techniques of teaching. They will display a poster
they used for a session at the most recent TESOL Conference in Seattle.

SUMMER HOURS MEMO - REMINDER
The official College business hours for Summer 2007 will be the
same as our academic year business hours, 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday
through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays. One hour is
provided for the lunch period Monday through Thursday and ½ hour on Fridays.
Supervisors should review the official business hours of the College and
provide as much flexibility as possible to their employees beginning June
18, 2007, and continuing through Labor Day, September 3, 2007.
