******* NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS *****
MESSAGE FROM BOARD OF
TRUSTEES CHAIR JEFF LEWIS
At the Special Meeting of the Board of Trustees on March 29th, a discussion
item was placed on the agenda that requires additional clarification:
Discussion about the Possibility of Allowing the Interim President to Apply
for the Permanent Position as President of Shoreline Community College.
This item was added in response to email which the Board received asking
that we reconsider our position and allow Interim President Lee Lambert to
apply for the position.
President Lambert did not have prior knowledge that this item was going to
be discussed. We apologize to Lee and to the campus if this discussion
prompted concern. We all have worked hard to establish a climate of trust
and open communications, and we did not intend to do anything to diminish
this effort.
The members of the BOT agree that to suggest that the Board will change the
process which has been ongoing for months would be a gross error on our
part. Lambert adds, "I have said my piece as to where I stand which is
that I would not apply for the position, and I will honor my word to the
campus and the community."
The Board wants to emphasize that we take emails seriously and welcome
comment. At this time, we also honor the work of the presidential search
committee, want to continue the process, and hope for a successful
conclusion later in the year.

WHY IS THE COLLEGE HIRING FULL-TIME FACULTY?
Message from the VP Academic Affairs
The Budget Committee ask for clarification regarding why the College is
hiring full-time faculty during a time when the College is looking at ways
to improve our efficiency. The positions identified were opened to
replace existing positions that are critical in maintaining our community's
confidence that the college is committed to a tradition of quality in our
degrees and certificates. These positions all are in departments with
full and robust enrollments because of the quality and reputation of the
programs/curriculum affiliated with them. In making decisions related to
tenure track positions and other one year commitments, program stability and
reputation along with verified robust enrollments are the primary criteria
used. We are here to protect the core of this institution, and that core is
stable and high quality teaching both in and out of the classroom.
This core rests on the foundation of a committed and knowledgeable tenured
faculty, and this foundation is supported by a dedicated group of part-time
faculty, staff and administrators. We are all part the primary reason
citizens enroll here: because they receive a high quality educational
experience day in and day out. If we can't commit
to maintaining our reputation as an institution where we provide our
students with a gifted and committed faculty, a friendly and knowledgeable
staff and an administration with a reputation for integrity and a focus on
our student's success, then we should seriously re-examine our mission,
vision and values and adjust them accordingly.
ACCOUNTS PAYABLE AND FINANCE OFFICE TRANSITION

The Finance Office would appreciate your patience as we approach year end. We have two new staff members who are learning a new system and we have not hired a Controller, but hope to by May 1, 2006.

If you are aware of a payment that has a critical due date, please hand carry it to Holly Woodmansee and she will see that it gets through the system. The Finance staff has been working very hard, nights and weekends and are eager to be made whole again. Your patience and
assistance are required. We thank you in advance.
COMMENTS TO THE RESTRUCTURE OF INSTRUCTION EXTENDED

college community on Monday, April 10th. However, the Dean Team and WED
will proceed in their discussions around the charges given to the group: a
$250,000 permanent reduction in administration and integrate PLT approved
WED units into Instruction. A tentative final date for a recommendation to
the PLT has been set for between April 18 and April 23, 2006, assuming all

MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
RE: Enrollment Status I would
like to provide the College with current information regarding our
enrollment status as of Winter Quarter ’06. The State Board for Community
and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) has issued a quarterly update regarding
enrollment at community colleges around the state. A
copy of this report can be downloaded
from our website. The report shows that our full-time equivalent (FTE)
enrollment stands at 92% of our biennial target (98% in 2004-05, and 90% in
2005-06 through fall). This is currently the lowest in the system. Other
colleges who are also below target are Highline CC which is at 93%, and the
Seattle CC District, at 95%. It is not a coincidence that the three
lowest-enrolled colleges are located in the Puget Sound along the I-5
corridor.
Enrollment at most of the community colleges in the state is lower than last
year, a continuing trend from 2003 when the state’s economy began to
improve. The stated enrollment goal set by the presidents of the community
colleges calls for colleges to hit a minimum target of 96% of its biennial
target. If this does not occur, the State Board will consider rebasing the
amount of funding to these colleges in the following year, 2007-08.
The College is in discussion with the State Board regarding future funding
allocation. We know that 2006-07 will represent an important year for SCC
as we strive to restore our enrollments and meet our 96% target.
These enrollment numbers highlight the importance of aggressively managing
our enrollment and marketing efforts while being mindful of our financial
situation.
To that end, the Enrollment Management Task Force (EMTF) has been charged to
develop strategies that will have an immediate positive impact on our
enrollment. They will provide the campus an update at our next all-campus
meeting on March 17th. I encourage you to attend this meeting
and offer ideas and feedback to the EMTF.
I
also want to stress the need for all of us to address our enrollment
situation with a sense of urgency. It is critical for us to tackle this
challenge together. Shoreline Community College continues to be well-known
for the quality of our service to students and for our collective and
individual dedication to this institution. With a positive attitude I am
confident that we will turn our enrollment situation around, and I thank all
of you for your assistance in this effort.
CAPS AND GOWNS FOR COMMENCEMENT Due Friday, April 14

graduating students. We also ask that you commit to participating in the

Wednesday, April 5
The Finance Office would appreciate your patience as we approach year end. We have two new staff members who are learning a new system and we have not hired a Controller, but hope to by May 1, 2006.
In the meantime, we are having some timing issues with payments and are working as fast as we can.
Friday, April 7

college community on Monday, April 10th. However, the Dean Team and WED
will proceed in their discussions around the charges given to the group: a

Commencement will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2006 at 2:00 pm in the

orders for members of the faculty and administration. We encourage your
participation as a tribute to the dedication and achievement of our
graduating students. We also ask that you commit to participating in the
ceremony when you place your order for a cap and gown, since the College
will be billed for all cap and gown orders that we place.

will be Friday, April 7th. If, after discussing the comments as they arrive
via the mailbox created for this solicitation,
any substantive changes are to be made they will be reported out to the
college community on Monday, April 10th. However, the Dean Team and WED
will proceed in their discussions around the charges given to the group: a
$250,000 permanent reduction in administration and integrate PLT approved
WED units into Instruction. A tentative final date for a recommendation to
the PLT has been set for between April 18 and April 23, 2006, assuming all
goes relatively smoothly.

GUARANTEED EDUCATION TUITION (GET) PROGRAM
Washington’s guaranteed education tuition program is an IRS, section 529 qualified state tuition program that allows individuals to purchase tuition units at today’s price to cover the cost of future tuition at any accredited college, university, technical or trade school in the US. Benefits may be used to pay for tuition and fees, books, room and board and a variety of other eligible expenses. Participants may purchase as few as one unit, or as many as 500 units. 100 units equal one academic year’s tuition at the public university or college in Washington with the highest annual tuition costs (generally UW or WSU).
March 31 is the last day to open a new GET account. April 30 is the last day to buy units at the current $66/unit price, if you have a GET account. Payments must be received by April 30, 2006.
If you are interested in enrolling a child, grandchild, stepchild,
niece/nephew, cousins and others, please contact the GET program at
1-877-GET-TUIT, or on-line.
