SERVER SPRING CLEANING
The College Rizzo server is fast approaching overload and your assistance is
needed. TSS is requesting that Shoreline staff and faculty perform some spring cleaning. Store to disk or burn to CD any files or other items in your home directory (the H drive) that can be archived. Once this archive has been performed, please delete these files or other items from your home directory. Delete any files or folders in your home directory which you are no longer using.
Every byte helps. If you should notice a Eudora folder in your home directory and you are using Outlook as your mail client, you can delete the Eudora folder; this will also free up disk space on the server. Now would also be a good time to go through your Outlook mailbox to remove unnecessary messages and attachments.
Please call the TSS helpline at ext. 5872. If you have questions or need assistance.

A NEW PRACTICE IN THE COMPUTER LAB PROMISES
TO CUT DOWN ON WASTE
Beginning Spring Quarter 2005, a
print management solution will be implemented to help curb paper and
resource waste on campus. It is anticipated that there will be a reduction
of waste of up to 70%, or 1.3 million sheets of paper per year in the
General Use Student Lab. This solution will be placed on the open computers
on the main floor of the Library Technology Center and on the computers in
the General Use Student Lab. This will be funded by a printing fee of 2
cents per page. Credits can be purchased at a Value Add Machine located on

LIST SERVE UPGRADE
TSS is pleased to announce, a long over due upgrade to our listserve system. In addition to the traditional e-mail functions and e-mail based commands, the new system has better support for modern formats, and features a web interface. The web interface can be used to view existing lists, subscribe and unsubscribe from lists, change personal list settings and browse the list archives. You must have a password to access some of the functions but the system will e-mail your password to you if you forget. All of the archives from the old system are being migrated over to the new system. Participating in list discussions will be the same. List e-mail commands are different but most functions can now be done through the web. TSS is now testing the new system with great success. We will be rolling out the new system to the campus in upcoming weeks. Stay Tuned!

Wednesday, March 23 from 3:00 - 9:00 pm

RESULTS OF SPAM APPLIANCE TEST DRIVE
The 30 day test drive of the anti-SPAM appliance is now over, and the original system has been reinstated. Results of the test were mixed. Users who previously reported 20 or greater SPAM messages per day experienced a significant drop, particularly in adult oriented messages. Users who previously received little or no SPAM experienced an increase is junk messages, including adult oriented messages. It is not yet clear if the results of the latter group are due to inferior filtering technology or as a result of the steady exponential growth in SPAM messages. What is clear is the Internet SPAMmers have already found ways around the new “finger printing” technology by appending random text to bottom of each message. It is also clear that no one solution will do it all. Please keep your reports coming so that we may more accurately asses the effectiveness of the two systems.

PLANT AND FACILITIES
ANNOUNCEMENT
Beginning Monday evening (March 7, 2005), contractors will begin removing
some small amounts of asbestos containing material (ACM) from several
mechanical rooms around the campus. This project involves only some pipe
insulation on fittings in numerous mechanical rooms and will not pose a
health risk to any members of our community. The work will be done in the
confined spaces of the mechanical rooms and the ACM will be "bagged," sealed
and then removed from the buildings. As a precautionary measure, we will do
air sample testing inside the mechanical rooms after the removal before
having the custodians, or facilities staff members return to work in those
areas.
We
wish to emphasize that this
work poses absolutely no danger to our community. These rooms are not
connected to the HVAC systems and there will be no transfer of ACM from
these rooms into any other space. The work will be done between the hours
of 5PM and 3AM to reduce the disruption to normal business and to allow the
contractors easier access and movement around the campus. If you have
questions, please contact Randy Stegmeier at
rstegmei@shoreline.edu.
GED TESTING SESSIONS ADDED
Saturday, April-September, Lake Forest Park Rm. 2
Beginning in April and running through September the Testing Center will be offering GED testing on the second Saturday of the month. Testing will be at the Lake Forest Park campus in room 2. Registration will be at 9:30 am and testing will end at 3:30 pm with a lunch break at noon. For specific information call the Testing Center at 533-6604.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Construction has started
on the second phase of the
Campus Water Main Project. Interwest Construction will be constructing a
pump house near the entrance to the Greenwood Parking Lot and connecting that
pump facility to the main campus connection at Carlyle Hall Road and
Greenwood. This phase also includes connecting the newly completed campus
water main to the individual buildings on campus for domestic water
service. The work is expected to be completed in mid-June. Any water
shut-downs or other disruptions should be minimal and are scheduled to occur
during breaks and/or weekends and evenings.
Interwest's on site Job Shack
and material "lay-down" area will be in and around the Greenwood lot.
For more information, contact Randy Stegmeier at
rstegmei@shoreline.edu.
Stay Tuned!
