NETWORK DOWNTIME NOTICE
Several network outages have been scheduled in order to apply patches to the computer network. Additional outages will continue to occur throughout next week with limited impact to localized areas of campus. These outages should be very short in duration but, as always, campus network users should be prepared in case there are unforeseen problems.

The first outage occurred yesterday that impacted connectivity to CIS. This included HP3000, DNS, Usenet news and inbound E-mail. The DNS outage may have caused problems with web browsing.

A second outage will occur at noon today. At this time all network traffic to and from campus will be shutdown. Again this outage should only last approximately five minutes but virtually all services will be unavailable.

The link to SCC@LFP will be patched early next week. The exact time is yet to be announced. Various network devices across campus will be patched over the next week. TSS staff will work to minimize the impact of these outages. Please feel free to e-mail or call me directly if you have any questions or concerns.

JUST A REMINDER ABOUT POLITICAL ACTIVITY ON CAMPUS
As we move into the upcoming season of heightened political activity, the College wants to remind you of the Washington State Executive Ethics Law as well as our College Policy # 4125: Standards of Ethical Conduct. In a nutshell, as a state employee you may not use state resources for political campaigns nor, as an employee with authority to direct, control, or influence the actions of another employee, you may not knowingly acquiesce in the other employee's use of state resources for a political campaign.

In no way is the College attempting to discourage anyone from being involved in matters that are political in nature. We support your right to be so engaged. Such engagement should occur on your own time, on your own equipment (phone, computer, copy machine, etc.)and at your own expense. The College wants each of you to be protected from accusation of wrong doing relative to the Ethics Law and is hopeful that this reminder will help.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SURVEY
The Professional Development Committee, Classified Staff Training, and President's Staff are working to develop a series of forums and training workshops for faculty, staff and administration over the 2003-2004 year. Please respond to the online survey. Your input is very important! If you have any questions, please contact Judy Yu at jyu@shoreline.edu

PRINTED BUDGET STATUS REPORTS WILL NO LONGER BE SENT
With the implementation of our new FMS Query system and hourly budget cuts we will no longer send out printed budget statements for fiscal year 2003-2004. You will still receive June and final statements for fiscal year 2002-2003. Budget managers can find updated budget status, expenditure, revenue and payroll information for their accounts through the FMS Query system. This should make your jobs much easier as the data is current and you will no
longer have to wait until the Finance Office has time to do your research for you - you will be in control of your information.

If you do not currently have access you will be expected to take a class before you can get it on your system. Classes will be offered at the end of July and periodically throughout the year. Please contact Sarah Amos by email at samos@shoreline.edu if you are interested in FMS Query.

The College wants each of you to be protected from accusation of wrong doing
relative to the Ethics Law and is hopeful that this reminder will help.

EMAIL FROM UNKNOWN SENDERS - SPAM REPORTING
In the last few days a lot of us have been receiving emails from "people" we don't know.  Theses often have titles like "RE: Application" or "RE Movie" and any number of other titles including "Hello".  The email body has already been scanned for the usual viruses so it can be opened but if the attachment survives the scanning process of the email server then don't open it. If you are receiving  work related attachments they will usually be a MS Word Document or an Excel Spreadsheet.  All the rest of this is "spam" or junk mail and you can feel free to delete it.
SPAM REPORTING: If you wish to report the "spam", unwanted, or unknown email then you can place it it the "Public Folders" of your Outlook system under "All Public Folders", "TSS", "SPAMdump".  A call to the TSS Help line is not needed if you follow this "spam reporting" procedure.
Again, opening an unknown email should be safe, opening an unknown attachment probably is not safe.

NEW SCAN CONVERSION INFORMATION
Starts Midnight July 31, 2003

Two major changes will be implemented on the SCAN long distance network, after midnight on July 31, 2003:

1) The length of SCAN authorization numbers will change from the current 6-digits to 7-digits,

A method was devised to simplify this transition for individual SCAN users. Immediately after July 31 everyone’s authorization number will have the digit “3” added to the beginning.

Therefore, if your authorization number is “123456” before August 1st, it will be “3123456” beginning August 1st.

2) The current sequence of dialing the authorization number before the telephone number will move to dialing the authorization number AFTER the telephone number.

Why is this change being implemented? Security control is an ongoing endeavor in the telecommunications industry. Changing the SCAN dial sequence and lengthening the authorization number will help to slow the progress of unscrupulous hacking or fraud attempts.

Note: these changes will not take place until after midnight, July 31, 2003. Please contact Nancy Lamus (x4531) or nlamus@shoreline.edu if you have questions.
