FIRST FRIDAY FILM
Friday, February 1 from 4:30-8 pm in Room 1522

Based on the 1989 book by C.L. Taubert, Tim Reid’s film, “Once Upon a Time … When We Were Colored” re-creates the world of a black community in the rural South. The story is wide reaching, but told mainly through the eyes of a young boy. Covering the years from 1946 to 1962 – the film covers a range of social issues of the times in ways that defy typical moviemaking – it is not slick, but rather a film from the heart.

The Visual Communications Technology (VCT) Club, as part of its on-campus FREE lecture series, "The Business of Doing Visual Business", will host: the SCC Graphic Design Industry Mentor Panel: “The Design Process”

The panelists are prominent Seattle graphic designers who also serve as industry mentors to SCC Visual Arts Center graphic design students. Each panelist will discuss and use examples from their own projects to illustrate the different stages in the Design Process.  Panelists are: Brian Boram, founder of RMB Vivid; Chris Holt, creative director Coolstone Design; David Kendall, creative director Kendall Ross Design; Jacqueline McCarthy, president Vivitiv; with moderator, Daniela Birch of Theorem Marketing.

HEART TRUTH FOR WOMEN
Friday, February 1, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Lower level library

February 1st is the National Wear Red Campaign to increase awareness about heart disease for women. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, but symptoms are often not recognized and misdiagnosed. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to WEAR RED and stop by the information table outside the lower level library to learn more about heart disease, risk factors and symptoms.  Presented by the Pre-Medical Science Club. 

NOMINATIONS FOR STUDENT AND FACULTY SPEAKERS, RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Commencement 2008 preparations are now in progress and the Commencement Committee requests:
1. Nominations for the student and faculty speakers

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR FORMER DIRECTOR OF COUNSELING, GORDY HARTLEY

The College is sad to inform you that Gordon Hartley, former Director of Counseling and a counselor at Shoreline Community College, died at the age of 72 on Tuesday (Jan 22) at Skagit Valley Hospital a
fter a short and valiant struggle with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Gordon was born July 20, 1935 in Cosmopolis, Washington.  His wife, Celia Hartley was the former Director of the Nursing Program at Shoreline.

Gordon was raised in Montesano, Washington, graduating from Montesano High School in 1953. He then served his country in Germany as a high speed radio operator during the Korean conflict. In 1957, he received an Associate Degree from Gray's Harbor Community College, where he was a member of the football team. He continued his education at Washington State University, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1959, a master's degree in a 1962, and a doctorate in education in 1974. Licensed as a clinical psychologist, Gordon spent his professional career in school counseling working as a school psychologist for brief periods in the Moses Lake, Ephrata, and Shoreline Public School districts. He spent 26 years at Shoreline Community College as a Counselor, serving as Director of Counseling from 1968 - 1980.

Due to the snow day, the annual HTC garage sale has been moved to today, Tuesday January 29. The Japanese Hospitality and Tourism College students are going back home to Japan soon and are selling all kinds of cool electronics, sports equipment, clothes and other stuff at bargain prices. Come wish them bon voyage and get a great deal. Come to the outside of the gym between 10am and 1:45pm today.

POLICY 5353 - SCC POLICY UPDATE

HEART TRUTH FOR WOMEN
Friday,February 1, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Lower level library

February 1st is the National Wear Red Campaign to increase awareness about heart disease for women. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, but symptoms are often not recognized and misdiagnosed. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to WEAR RED and stop by the information table outside the lower level library to learn more about heart disease, risk factors and symptoms.  Presented by the Pre-Medical Science Club.

In order to streamline the payment process for annual orders the following procedures will take effect immediately.

When invoices are received for payments covered by annual orders, payments will be made without department confirmation. Copies of invoices will be sent to the department marked PAID, for department records.  If goods have not been received or invoices are in error please contact accounts payable within 48 hours of receipt of the invoice copy at extension 4527.

Departments will be notified if an annual order does not have enough funds encumbered to cover the costs of the outstanding invoices.  Invoices will not be paid until the annual order is increased to cover the costs of pending invoices. This lets students create their active directory accounts and e-mails, and they can reset their passwords if they forget them. WRITING PERSONAL STATEMENTS FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
Thursday, January  24 from 3:00 am to 4:30 pm in the The Writing & Learning Studio

This workshop will help you understand the appropriate content and tone for personal statements. You will have the opportunity to do some writing during the workshop. This is not a workshop for people who only want feedback on their completed statements. Prerequisite: completed or concurrent enrollment in ENG 101. The workshop will be repeated on Monday, Feb 11, also from 3:00 to 4:30 pm.

WELCOME JIM TUTTLE
Jim Tuttle is serving as the Special Assistant to the President for Human Resources and Legal Affairs, effective January 14, 2008. In addition to a Juris Doctor degree, Jim served in the Office of the Attorney General (for 29 years) and has worked with a number of Washington state community colleges.  His broad experience includes providing general counsel to educational institutions related to contracts, personnel and labor relations and discrimination.

Jim’s assignment with the College is expected to continue through August 2008 and he will report directly to the president. Jim’s primary areas of responsibility are as follows:

NEW HOURS IN THE WRITING & LEARNING STUDIO
The Writing & Learning Studio will be CLOSED on the weekends this quarter, but thanks to the continued support of Tony Costa's tutoring programs, The Studio will have "extended hours" two days a week.  Beginning Jan. 22, The Studio will be open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. FOOD SERVICE HIRING
Chartwells is beginning the hiring process for food service operations in the new PUB. At this time, applications are available at the Information Desk in the Bookstore.  Students are encouraged to fill out an application and return it to the Bookstore.  The first round of applications will be picked up by Chartwells on Wednesday, January 23rd.  The application process will be on-going, but students are encouraged to apply early. PROCEDURAL CHANGES FOR PAYMENTS OF ANNUAL (BLANKET) ORDERS
In order to streamline the payment process for annual orders the following procedures will take effect immediately.

When invoices are received for payments covered by annual orders, payments will be made without department confirmation. Copies of invoices will be sent to the department marked PAID, for department records.  If goods have not been received or invoices are in error please contact accounts payable within 48 hours of receipt of the invoice copy at extension 4527.

Departments will be notified if an annual order does not have enough funds encumbered to cover the costs of the outstanding invoices.  Invoices will not be paid until the annual order is increased to cover the costs of pending invoices. WRITING PERSONAL STATEMENTS FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

This workshop will help you understand the appropriate content and tone for personal statements. You will have the opportunity to do some writing during the workshop. This is not a workshop for people who only want feedback on their completed statements. Prerequisite: completed or concurrent enrollment in ENG 101. The workshop will be repeated on Monday, Feb 11, also from 3:00 to 4:30 pm.

Jim Tuttle is serving as the Special Assistant to the President for Human Resources and Legal Affairs, effective January 14, 2008. In addition to a Juris Doctor degree, Jim served in the Office of the Attorney General (for 29 years) and has worked with a number of Washington state community colleges.  His broad experience includes providing general counsel to educational institutions related to contracts, personnel and labor relations and discrimination.

Jim’s assignment with the College is expected to continue through August 2008 and he will report directly to the president. Jim’s primary areas of responsibility are as follows:

FACES PROJECT
Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 pm at the Shoreline Historical Museum

Do you remember those striking photos from the FACES Project?  In collaboration with the Shoreline Historical Museum and the Shoreline Arts Council, the photos will be featured again at the museum Saturday, January 19, 2008 with an afternoon reception beginning at 1:00 p.m. The 3-year grant titled “Faces of Our Community: Connecting through Story” was funded to Shoreline Community College in 2001 through the Department of Education F.I.P.S.E. grant and focused on raising awareness of immigrant/refugee experiences on the college campus and in the local community. Through stunning photos, the exhibit reflects the ways in which immigrants bridge the worlds of their native culture and their new American culture.  After completion of the new PUB, the photos will be placed in the new Equity and Student Connections center. NEW ACTING DIRECTOR OF THE PARENT-CHILD CENTER
Following the departure of Paulette Graham, Director of the Parent-Child Center, the College is pleased to announce that Lisa Dorgan has been appointed as the Acting Director of the Parent-Child Center, effective January 2, 2008. She will remain in the acting position until a new director is hired.

Lisa has a two-year degree in Early Childhood Education from Shoreline Community College.  She has been a Shoreline employee for nine years and has worked as a Child Care Assistant, Program Specialist/Evening program Manager, Program Support Supervisor and Child Care Manager in the Parent-Child Center.  We are very grateful that Lisa was willing to step into the leadership role in the Center.  Her extensive amount of experience in the Center will be very helpful.

The Shoreline Community College Men's And Women's Basketball Teams play Olympic Community College on Wednesday, January 16th. The Women play at 5:30 PM and the Men play at 7:30 PM. Both games are in the SCC Gym (Building 3000).

The Lady Dolphins are 2-10 on the season and 0-3 in the Northern Region, playing with a full roster players that are all Freshmen or first year players after the season was cancelled last year due to not enough players on the squad. The Men's team is 9-6 for the season and 1-2 in the Northern Region but is very competitive and have lost 2 games on last second shots and could be 11-4 very easily.

Please come out and support the SCC Basketball Teams this Wednesday night at the Shoreline CC Gym. You can find articles and action shots from past games on the Shoreline Athletic Department Website at www.shoreline.edu/athletics. Plus information on other Shoreline sports and activities as well.

NEW ACTING DIRECTOR OF THE PARENT-CHILD CENTER
Following the departure of Paulette Graham, Director of the Parent-Child Center, the College is pleased to announce that Lisa Dorgan has been appointed as the Acting Director of the Parent-Child Center, effective January 2, 2008. She will remain in the acting position until a new director is hired.

Lisa has a two-year degree in Early Childhood Education from Shoreline Community College.  She has been a Shoreline employee for nine years and has worked as a Child Care Assistant, Program Specialist/Evening program Manager, Program Support Supervisor and Child Care Manager in the Parent-Child Center.  We are very grateful that Lisa was willing to step into the leadership role in the Center.  Her extensive amount of experience in the Center will be very helpful.

WELCOME TO POLLIE MCCLOSKEY, INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
Pollie McCloskey has joined  International Programs as the temporary Program Manager for International Education.  She is covering some of Colleen Ferguson’s responsibilities until June while Colleen is on family leave.  Pollie McCloskey recently received a Master's degree in International Relations and Religion from Boston University.  Pollie's personal love of learning more about the world through travel motivated her to also provide these opportunities for others.  She has many years of experience in designing and leading service learning trips to Honduras for churches and schools.  She believes in the importance of empowering people to more fully engage in and understand the interconnectedness of the world.   Her husband, Stephen McCloskey, is an instructor here at SCC in the Bus Ad Department".

FACES PROJECT
Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 pm at the Shoreline Historical Museum

Do you remember those striking photos from the FACES Project?  In collaboration with the Shoreline Historical Museum and the Shoreline Arts Council, the photos will be featured again at the museum Saturday, January 19, 2008 with an afternoon reception beginning at 1:00 p.m. The 3-year grant titled “Faces of Our Community: Connecting through Story” was funded to Shoreline Community College in 2001 through the Department of Education F.I.P.S.E. grant and focused on raising awareness of immigrant/refugee experiences on the college campus and in the local community. Through stunning photos, the exhibit reflects the ways in which immigrants bridge the worlds of their native culture and their new American culture.  After completion of the new PUB, the photos will be placed in the new Equity and Student Connections center. ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY CELEBRATION
Tuesday, January 15 from 9:30 - 1:30  am in the Campus Theater
Students and staff will gather in the Campus Theater on Tuesday, Jan. 15, to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to honor his accomplishments. This year's celebration, Educational Gain - Systemic Loss, will began at 9:30 am and events will be held each hour until 1:30 p.m. SCC’s Black Students’ Union and African Students Club sponsor the celebration which includes music, spoken word, dance, and discourse around the theme.
