CREATING OPPORTUNITIES E-ZINE
This online magazine, written by the staff of the State Board Communications Office, is designed to share best practices and provide in-depth coverage of issues and trends affecting the two-year colleges.The January edition focuses on the importance of protecting Washington’s long-term investments (infrastructure) by adequately funding maintenance and operations. In addition to our featured article, the eZine also includes an “All in the Family” section, highlighting promotions and awards for college employees, and a “College News” section, highlighting interesting news around the college system.

Interim President Lambert would like to announce the appointment of Dr. Andrea Rye to the position of Acting Vice President of Student Services effective immediately. INQUIRY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (IMS) WEB TRAINING
Wednesday, February 8 from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm in Room 4214

The College will soon implement its new Inquiry Management System (IMS), and we want to show it to the campus community!  We will have a demonstration of the web interface from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm, Wednesday, 2/8/06, beginning in Room 1102 and ending in Room 4214.  While the project was discussed at an all campus meeting and through other venues earlier in the year, we realize you may still have questions about it.  Click to download more information about the system.

This information session covers transfer planning as well as the application procedures. It is good for those who are doing advance planning as well as those who are applying now and have questions. Regular transfer students to UW Seattle for Summer and Fall have a deadline of Feb 15. This session will be repeated on Feb 6 at 1:45 p.m.

On Wednesday morning, February 1, College and University representatives will be available to SCC students and faculty from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the PUB Main Dining Room.  Twenty-four schools have signed up to attend.  We encourage all those interested in transfer information to attend.

FIRST FRIDAY FILM SERIES - "MAD HOT BALLROOM"
Friday, February 3, 4:30-8:00pm, Room 1522

About 11 years ago, the New York City elementary schools introduced a pilot program making ballroom dancing a required 10-week course. Ten years later, more than 60 schools were in the program, with teachers from the American Ballroom Theater teaching the classes. At the conclusion of each course, schools could participate in city-wide competitions, with one school winning a trophy. "Mad Hot Ballroom" follows three public schools in culturally diverse communities, from the first dance to the last. The experience provides an opportunity for the children to feel success no matter what their academic status. American film directed by Marilyn Agrelo. Pizza and dessert served before. $5 donation. CLASSIFIED STAFF CHILI CHALLENGE
Wednesday, February 8th

It’s that time of year again when the weather turns dark, wet, and chili. Don’t miss out on the fun and good food! The Classified Training and Staff Development Committee and the Shoreline Community College Foundation proudly present, the second annual Chili Challenge from noon to 1:00 in the Canteen. If you would like to attend, the cost is still only $1. To make sure we have enough chili and fixings, please RSVP your plan to attend to Chi-Feng Wu, in HR/ER, (ext. 4769 or cwu@shoreline.edu). CLASSIFIED STAFF WELLNESS RELEASE TIME
In an attempt to encourage classified staff members to participate in routinely scheduled health and wellness activities, the College Wellness Committee, working with our Athletic/Intramural Programs, has designed a program of physical activities.  These activities will allow you to use "release" time for 1/2 hour on each day of the activity along with 1/2 hour of your personal time.

Please note "release time" is only provided for regular, routinely scheduled activities. You must attend at least two sessions per week to use "release time".  You cannot attend more than three session per week or be allowed more than 1.5 hours per week of "release time" for wellness activities.  All "release time" sponsored activities are housed in or offered through the 3000 building (gym).  For information on what options are available Winter Quarter 2006 please go to intramurals webpage.

Join the Chamber Chorale and Shoreline Singers for their fundraising auction/concert. This event will include authentic Spanish tapas and performances by the SCC choirs, Spanish singer Rosa Duarte, and pianist Charles Enlow. Proceeds will benefit the 2006 SCC choir tour to Spain this Spring. Ticket Prices: $15 General Admission, $10 SCC Staff/Seniors, $5 Students. Bring your checkbook for the auction!

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH UPDATE
The committee met Jan. 24th to decide on criteria for the presidential profile. These criteria will be presented to the Board of Trustees at their study session on Wednesday, Jan. 25th and once adopted, the criteria will be sent to the campus. There is also a brochure in the works which should be available by the beginning of February.  The committee will have training in early February on the best ways to read applications and what to look for in the letters and resumes. The college has no way of knowing how many applications there will be, but the feeling is about 40-50.

Do you need to work out this quarter? The Cardio & Conditioning Intramural drop-in class has begun! Workout sessions are held Tuesdays and Thursdays in the gym - Room 3025. Class begins at 12:40pm. Everyone is welcome. For added motivation, use the buddy system and bring a friend! Each exercise enthusiast can choose their own level of intensity and complexity to suit their needs.

PAYCHECKS
Wednesday, February 1, Room 1012

Beginning in February, paychecks will no longer be mailed the day before payroll, but will be available for pick up from departments/divisions on pay days. Employees who currently have their checks mailed were notified of this change with their 1/10 or 1/15 paychecks.
If paychecks are not picked up from departments/divisions, they will be returned to Human Resources to be mailed the morning of the next business day. Since we are implementing this change to reduce costs, I encourage employees to pick up their checks on pay days.
Employees who do not work on the main campus will continue to have their checks mailed. If you have any questions, please call Nancy Teske (ext. 4515) if you are classified, faculty, or exempt employees; or Veronica Botts (ext. 4510) if you are a student or hourly employee.

DON'T FORGET TO COMPLETE YOUR PLT EVALUATIONS - LAST DAY

Today is the last day to submit your PLT evaluations.  The Shoreline College Council appoints a task force to develop and implement an evaluation of the members of the President's Leadership Team. 
The items listed in the evaluation tool are based on the recommendations presented by the Climate Task Force Report
(2005). 
The PLT members to be evaluated are: John Backes, Interim VP Academic Affairs; Beverly Brandt, EVP Admin Services; Kae Peterson, Sr. Executive Community Resources; Lee Lambert, Interim President, and Judy Yu, Director of Communications. Paulette Fleming, interim VPHR will not undergo this evaluation.

Ten years later, more than 60 schools were in the program, with teachers from the American Ballroom Theater teaching the classes. At the conclusion of each course, schools could participate in city-wide competitions, with one school winning a trophy. "Mad Hot Ballroom" follows three public schools in culturally diverse communities, from the first dance to the last. In an attempt to encourage classified staff members to participate in routinely scheduled health and wellness activities, the College Wellness Committee, working with our Athletic/Intramural Programs, has designed a program of physical activities.  These activities will allow you to use "release" time for 1/2 hour on each day of the activity along with 1/2 hour of your personal time.

Please note "release time" is only provided for regular, routinely scheduled activities. PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH UPDATE
The committee met Jan. 24th to decide on criteria for the presidential profile. These criteria will be presented to the Board of Trustees at their study session on Wednesday, Jan. 25th and once adopted, the criteria will be sent to the campus. There is also a brochure in the works which should be available by the beginning of February.  The committee will have training in early February on the best ways to read applications and what to look for in the letters and resumes. The college has no way of knowing how many applications there will be, but the feeling is about 40-50.

If you wish to give any input to Dr. Bob Barringer, the presidential search consultant, you may contact him by phone at (828) 252-7153 or by email at goldhill@skyrunner.net.  If you wish to nominate someone for the position of president, you are encouraged to get the permission of the person nominated and then to please contact Jamie Smith in HR so an application can be sent to the person. Beginning in February, paychecks will no longer be mailed the day before payroll, but will be available for pick up from departments/divisions on pay days. Employees who currently have their checks mailed were notified of this change with their 1/10 or 1/15 paychecks.
If paychecks are not picked up from departments/divisions, they will be returned to Human Resources to be mailed the morning of the next business day. Since we are implementing this change to reduce costs, I encourage employees to pick up their checks on pay days.
Employees who do not work on the main campus will continue to have their checks mailed. If you have any questions, please call Nancy Teske (ext. 4515) if you are classified, faculty, or exempt employees; or Veronica Botts (ext. 4510) if you are a student or hourly employee.

FOOD SERVICE UPDATE
April 1st is fast approaching and the PUB will soon be coming down. The Food Service Committee is being re-instituted so that all campus contingencies will have input regarding how Food Services will be provided during this construction period. The Committee is chaired by Mary Kelemen. What we currently know:
>Specialty Foods (Sean Lakeside) is under contract to provide food in the PUB
  through the end of Winter Quarter.
>Once the PUB is torn down there will not be a kitchen and/or food preparation
  space available on campus.
>An RFP is going out soliciting vendors with the capability to provide a variety
  of food items served from self-contained units. The Food Service Committee
  will review the responses to the RFP and make recommendations.
>The Student Lounge (5000 Bldg lower level) will have microwaves available for
  warming food and with tables & chairs for dining.
>The Bookstore will increase the variety of food items carried and expand to
  carry frozen and microwaveable items. If you have ideas, comments

You have until the end of the month to submit your PLT evaluations.  The Shoreline College Council appoints a task force to develop and implement an evaluation of the members of the President's Leadership Team. 
The items listed in the evaluation tool are based on the recommendations presented by the Climate Task Force Report (2005).  The PLT members to be evaluated are: John Backes, Interim VP Academic Affairs; Beverly Brandt, EVP Admin Services; Kae Peterson, Sr. Executive Community Resources; Lee Lambert, Interim President, and Judy Yu, Director of Communications.  Zakiya Stewart, who announced her retirement last week, and Paulette Fleming, interim VPHR will not undergo this evaluation.

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH UPDATE
The committee met Jan. 24th to decide on criteria for the presidential profile. These criteria will be presented to the Board of Trustees at their study session on Wednesday, Jan. 25th and once adopted, the criteria will be sent to the campus. There is also a brochure in the works which should be available by the beginning of February.  The committee will have training in early February on the best ways to read applications and what to look for in the letters and resumes. The college has no way of knowing how many applications there will be, but the feeling is about 40-50.

If you wish to give any input to Dr. Bob Barringer, the presidential search consultant, you may contact him by phone at (828) 252-7153 or by email at goldhill@skyrunner.net.  If you wish to nominate someone for the position of president, you are encouraged to get the permission of the person nominated and then to please contact Jamie Smith in HR so an application can be sent to the person. All persons who wish to be considered for this position must fill out the application. Applications received before or on March 31st deadline will receive first consideration, but the position is open until filled.  Information will be available on the Presidential Search website.

CANCIONES DEL AMOR

W-2 FORMS FOR EMPLOYEES
Tuesday, January 31

End of year W-2 tax forms will be mailed to employees from a company in Chicago sometime this week. You should receive your W-2 no later than January 31st.
If you do not receive your W-2 because you have changed your address, please direct your request for a change of address in writing, including your signature, to the Human Resources office. This solo recital with the engaging pianist Dainius Vaicekonis will include Scarlatti and Beethoven sonatas, Scriabin and Ligeti etudes, and works by Chopin, Debussy and others.  $15, $10, $5.  Proceeds to benefit the Shoreline Piano Scholarship Fund.

The Shoreline College Council appoints a task force to develop and implement an evaluation of the members of the President's Leadership Team. 
The items listed in the evaluation tool are based on the recommendations presented by the Climate Task Force Report (2005).  The PLT members to be evaluated are: John Backes, Interim VP Academic Affairs; Beverly Brandt, EVP Admin Services; Kae Peterson, Sr. Executive Community Resources; Lee Lambert, Interim President, and Judy Yu, Director of Communications.  Zakiya Stewart, who announced her retirement last week, and Paulette Fleming, interim VPHR will not undergo this evaluation.

Beginning in February, paychecks will no longer be mailed the day before payroll, but will be available for pick up from departments/divisions on pay days. Employees who currently have their checks mailed were notified of this change with their 1/10 or 1/15 paychecks.
If paychecks are not picked up from departments/divisions, they will be returned to Human Resources to be mailed the morning of the next business day. Since we are implementing this change to reduce costs, I encourage employees to pick up their checks on pay days.
Employees who do not work on the main campus will continue to have their checks mailed. If you have any questions, please call Nancy Teske (ext. 4515) if you are classified, faculty, or exempt employees; or Veronica Botts (ext. 4510) if you are a student or hourly employee.

April 1st is fast approaching and the PUB will soon be coming down. The Food Service Committee is being re-instituted so that all campus contingencies will have input regarding how Food Services will be provided during this construction period. The Committee is chaired by Mary Kelemen. What we currently know:
>Specialty Foods (Sean Lakeside) is under contract to provide food in the PUB
  through the end of Winter Quarter.
>Once the PUB is torn down there will not be a kitchen and/or food preparation
  space available on campus.
>An RFP is going out soliciting vendors with the capability to provide a variety
  of food items served from self-contained units. The Food Service Committee
  will review the responses to the RFP and make recommendations.
>The Student Lounge (5000 Bldg lower level) will have microwaves available for
  warming food and with tables & chairs for dining.
>The Bookstore will increase the variety of food items carried and expand to
  carry frozen and microwaveable items. If you have ideas, comments

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON INFORMATION SESSION

This information session covers transfer planning as well as the application procedures. It is good for those who are doing advance planning as well as those who are applying now and have questions. Come out and support your Dolphin basketball teams this Wednesday evening as they take on Olympic. The women's game tips off at 5:30pm followed by the men's game at 7:30pm. Both teams are doing very well this year and have an excellent opportunity to make the playoffs. The men's team currently has a record of 11-5 and the women's team has a record of 10-6. HOW TO WRITE A PERSONAL STATEMENT FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

HOW TO WRITE A PERSONAL STATEMENT FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

Many students have application due dates this quarter. Please encourage students to come. The workshop covers the purpose, structure, and do's and don'ts for the statement. We also help them develop ideas and start writing! This workshop will be repeated on Mon, Feb 6 room 3:00 to 4:30.

This information session covers transfer planning as well as the application procedures. It is good for those who are doing advance planning as well as those who are applying now and have questions. Regular transfer students to UW Seattle for Summer and Fall have a deadline of Feb 15. This session will be repeated on Feb 2 at 4:00 p.m. and on Feb 6 at 1:45 p.m.
