NOTIFICATION OF AMENDMENTS TO THE FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE ACT
Recent federal legislation provides for two new types of employee leave
under FMLA. One type, "Exigency Leave", will not be effective until the
applicable federal regulations are issued. The other, "Service Member Family
Leave", is effective immediately.
An eligible college employee who is the spouse, child, parent, or next of
kin of a covered service member is now entitled to up to 26 workweeks of
leave during a 12-month period to care for the service member. A covered
service member is a member of the U.S. Armed Forces (including National
Guard or Reserves) who is undergoing medical treatment, recuperation, or
therapy, or is otherwise in outpatient status or on the temporary disability
retired list, for a specified serious injury or illness incurred in line of
duty on active duty.
The process for obtaining Service Member Family Leave is the same as for
other types of FMLA leave. If you have questions about FMLA leave, contact
Human Resources.
REPORT FROM BUDGET COMMITTEE
Bob Francis, Chair, SCC Budget Committee
As part of the hiring criteria adopted in October 2007 by PSET (in
consultation with the Budget Committee), the VPAS is to submit quarterly
reports regarding new hires to the Budget Committee. The Budget Committee is
then to determine if the hiring process was followed and the criteria
reasonably met. Following this determination, the Budget Committee is to
communicate its findings to the campus community. In compliance with these
procedures, the VPAS informed the Budget Committee that one hire was made
during the fall quarter: a position in HR. The committee found that the
hiring process was satisfactorily followed. The committee also let PSET know
that there is no need to justify all positions based on the strategic plan
since there can be "reasonable basis" for hiring outside the strategic plan
(e.g. legal, contractual, accreditation). If you have any questions feel
free to contact me or any members of the budget committee.

FORMER
SCC STUDENT AND EMPLOYEE PASSES AWAY
Anne Knight, who worked as a learning assistant in The Writing &
Learning Studio for six years (2000-2006), passed away on Feb. 13 after
a two-year battle with complications from recurrent breast cancer. A
memorial service is planned for March 9, 2:00 p.m., at Shoreline
Unitarian Universalist Church, 14724 1st Ave. N.E. in
Shoreline.
In addition to her work in The Studio, Anne was
active on our campus, taking music and art classes, performing in the
choir, and serving as the student representative on various committees.
Many ESL students used The Writing & Learning Studio (TWLS) particularly
for Anne’s excellent assistance with grammar and her warm, gentle
