CAMPUS UPDATE
We would like to provide an update on the
investigation into a complaint filed by a student last
January 29th. Yesterday, Feb. 11, Shoreline PD and SCC
Safety and Security met with the student to clarify
certain details of the complaint. The student had been
unavailable since the time she filed the report on the
29th until yesterday.
After further
questioning, the Shoreline Police Department has closed
the case.
The safety of students
and staff is our paramount concern. According to our
procedures, administration consults with SCC Safety and
Security and the Shoreline PD to determine if the campus
should be notified when incidents occur. The purpose of
the notification is to warn our community of imminent
danger, ask for assistance in an investigation, or to
issue reminders about safety.
The complaint on January
29th was investigated thoroughly by Safety & Security
in the days following the incident. Some students in
Building 1100 were notified of the incident, given
precautionary warnings, and asked for their help.
However, an all-campus notice was not issued as it was
not believed that students and staff were in danger or
threatened. There are other considerations that we must
keep in mind whenever communications are issued: the
stage of an active investigation, revealing the identity
of a victim, the severity of the incident, etc.
Again, should
communication be warranted, it will be issued to the
campus through email, postings to the internet or the
intranet (DAAG), voicemail or via flyers. If you have
questions about our procedures, contact Judy Yu at
x.4634.

TIPS FROM THE MAILROOM
The Mailroom has a few recommendations for the

addressing departmental mail PLEASE indicate both the

easier for those distributing the mail. (2) When bringing
outgoing mail to the mailroom, PLEASE put it in the
designated drop box, this is especially important if no

DEADLINE FOR ALMA MATER SONGWRITING
CONTEST IS MARCH 12, 2004
There's still plenty of time to submit your song for the Alma Mater competition
-- the deadline is March 12th. This is just a reminder. The song will be performed at this
year's 40th commencement. Music Professor Rob Bigley is heading up the contest. The winner
will receive an SCC Bookstore gift certificate. For guidelines, visit the Announcements
page of the Feb. 3rd edition of Net News.
CAMPUS UPDATE
We would like to provide an update on the investigation into a complaint filed by
a student last January 29th. Yesterday, Feb. 11, Shoreline PD and SCC Safety and Security
met with the student to clarify certain details of the complaint. The student had been
unavailable since the time she filed the report on the 29th until yesterday.
After further questioning, the Shoreline Police
Department has closed the case.
The safety of students and staff is our paramount
concern. According to our procedures, administration consults with SCC Safety and Security
and the Shoreline PD to determine if the campus should be notified when incidents occur.
The purpose of the notification is to warn our community of imminent danger, ask for
assistance in an investigation, or to issue reminders about safety.
The complaint on January 29th was investigated thoroughly
by Safety & Security in the days following the incident. Some students in Building
1100 were notified of the incident, given precautionary warnings, and asked for their
help. However, an all-campus notice was not issued as it was not believed that students
and staff were in danger or threatened. There are other considerations that we must keep
in mind whenever communications are issued: the stage of an active investigation,
revealing the identity of a victim, the severity of the incident, etc.
Again, should communication be warranted, it will be
issued to the campus through email, postings to the internet or the intranet (DAAG),
voicemail or via flyers. If you have questions about our procedures, contact Judy Yu at
x.4634.
LAST CHANCE! LAST ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT - POSTPONED
Due to limited numbers registering their teams, the LAST ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
scheduled to tee off Friday is being postponed until spring. Something to look forward to:
golfing out-of-doors in your favorite polyester golf slacks with matching cap. More
details to follow as the events draws near.
MAIL TIPS FROM THE MAILROOM
The Mailroom has a few recommendations for the campus to make mail delivery more
expedient. (1) when addressing departmental mail PLEASE indicate both the name and
department of the recipient, this makes it much easier for those distributing the mail.
(2) When bringing outgoing mail to the mailroom, PLEASE put it in the designated drop box,
this is especially important if no one is present in the mailroom. >MORE

PARASKEVIDEKATRIAPHOBIA:
Fear of Friday the 13th
Though no one can say for sure when and why
human beings first associated the number 13 with
misfortune, the belief is assumed to be quite old and
there are any number of theories purporting to trace its
origins to antiquity and beyond. It has been proposed,
for example, that fears surrounding the number 13 are as
ancient as the act of counting. Primitive man had only
his 10 fingers and two feet to represent units, so he
could not count higher than 12. What lay beyond that
13 was an impenetrable mystery, hence an
object of superstition.
