GUY HAMILTON PROMOTES STATE FUNDING FOR CLASSROOM EQUIPMENT FROM STATE
Biotechnology Program Chair Guy Hamilton was interviewed by Puget Sound Business Journal staff writer, Clay Holtzman, in the November 30-December 6th edition.  "Tech schools seek to upgrade outdated equipment" highlights the unfortunate lack of funding for updated classroom equipment and its impacts on our students, graduates and industry.  Hamilton says that SCC wants $43,000 to buy two more high-powered microscopes and a camera so students could take pictures of tissue samples, which would allow them to analyze their work later.  Currently 16 students are sharing two microscopes.  SBCTC is preparing to ask for $8.5 million for flight simulators, lab equipment, etc. for the colleges across the state.

WIRELESS NETWORK SOON TO REQUIRE AUTHENTICATION
In September 2005, the FCC issued an order extending the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act ("CALEA") to providers of broadband Internet access. The law stipulates that operators of public networks provide the necessary infrastructure to facilitate wire-taps in support of law enforcement activities. The Community and Technical Colleges of the State of Washington have elected to establish an exemption from CALEA by declaring our networks private.  In order to maintain exempt status from CALEA the college can allow Internet access only to students, faculty and staff of the college and not to the general public.  The campus wireless network will require users to login beginning Jan 2, 2008.

The order from the FCC is vague and many of the provision have not yet been tested in court. For the time being, members of the general public may access the Internet from the reference computers in the library. Eventually ID validation may be required here as well to maintain our CALEA exemption. The campus wireless network is closed to the general public.

******* TODAY'S EVENTS ********

WORLD AIDS DAY
Monday, December 3

World AIDS Day was December 1.  It has been reported that approximately 33.2 million people globally are living with HIV today (www.cdc.gov/hiv/topic , www.istandwithmagic.com, www.imcworldwide). In the US, over 1 million people are living with HIV.  During the week of December 3, we have an opportunity to assist students with passing out Red Ribbons in support of this day.  If you would like to hand out ribbons please stop by the A & C Office on Monday at 8:30 and they will be available for your pick up.  This is a small contribution to this world issue, but every little bit helps in the fight against HIV/AIDS.   Other ways to support the HIV/AIDS fight: Encourage individuals to get tested, volunteer, learn more about HIV/AIDS, provide HIV/AIDS awareness literature, make donations, sponsor fundraisers, and speak out, speak out, speak out about HIV/AIDS.

COMBINED FUND DRIVE
The Combined Fund Drive (CFD) is a terrific way for SCC employees to help our local communities. The CFD is also a great opportunity to invest in the students here at SCC. You can designate your gift directly to the SCC Foundation, by indicating CFD charity code #315782. From this past July through Oct 31, we have served well over 60 students by providing financial assistance and help with tuition, books, parking fees and other emergency needs. Without this aid, these students would not be able to stay enrolled in school. Please consider giving generously and designating Shoreline Community College Foundation. Your support does make a meaningful difference here on campus.
