VP GEORGE DOUGLAS PASSES AWAY
It is with a heavy heart that we inform the campus
community of the death of Executive Vice
President Emeritus George Douglas, who died
Tuesday, July 27th at the age of 78. Douglas, one of
SCCs pioneers, began his work at SCC in July, 1963,
before the College opened its doors. He was hired as the
director of the library, and later became the Vice
President of Academics, and lastly, Executive Vice
President under President Ron Bells administration.
He retired in June, 1986. Douglas was considered by many
to be the main backbone of the SCC operating and planning
program. Longtime employees will fondly remember his
letters that he sent to faculty and staff at the
beginning of each academic year. President Moore has
referred to some of his infamous letters in
her Opening Week letters. Funeral arrangements have been
entrusted to Purdy and Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home

MEDIA ALERT
Last Friday, the Seattle PI reported the difficulties faced
by community college transfer students who hope to enter
the UW. The article's headline "No More Transfers to
UW" has caused great concern for many of our
students. In the event that you should be contacted by a
student, family, friends, neighbors or anyone, please
keep a few messages in mind:
1) The need for additional funding for higher education
is real. Demand for education at community colleges and
4-year institutions is outstripping supply.
2) We, at SCC understand the UW's desire to manage
enrollment, however, we are concerned for our students.
As such, we are placing emphasis on preparing students as
early as possible for their majors so that they can
transfer to a 4-year as a junior.
3) We are offering workshops on how to better prepare
your application, career counseling, majors course, and
more in order to assist our students with the transfer
process. We will work closely with the UW on this so that
we can provide timely and accurate information to our
students.

"So upsetting," sums up Chris' reaction to
