MESSAGE FROM VP BRANDT
Re; PUB RENOVATION UPDATE
In 2004-2005 the Legislature approved a COP (Certificate of Participation) of $15,000,000 to renovate the PUB at Shoreline Community College. The renovation must be repaid using locally generated funds that are not part of the College’s regular state allocation, tuition or class fees. Capital funds approved for this project cannot be used for operations or for any other project. This is a “stand alone” approval project including the special use permit from the City of Shoreline for construction. For several years the students have been assessed themselves a PUB renovation fee to make this project possible. Many years ago and the college had attempted this project, but was not successful through the State System capital request process. >

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Re; Professor Ken LaFountaine
On Monday morning,
April 24th, at 4:45 am, a great friend and colleague of the College
passed away at his home. Ken LaFountaine, professor of
Native American Studies, was a revered and beloved member of the Shoreline
Community College family, and it is with great sadness that we announce his
passing. A memorial service will be held to commemorate his life on
Friday, April 28th at 1:00 pm in the SCC Gym. A reception will follow
at 4:00 pm in the PUB. Please join me in remembering the many contributions this great
man made to this College during his years of service.
Dr. Andrea Rye, VP of Student Services and
former Dean of the Intra-American Studies & Social Sciences division notes,
"Ken has been a major force in the
establishment and continued development of the Intra-American Studies
program at Shoreline Community College, not only in American Indian Studies
but Ethnic and Women's Studies as well. He was a member of the IAS division
during its early stages of development and has created and taught courses in
History and Multicultural Studies. His many contributions were instrumental
in the established reputation that Shoreline Community College has
maintained over the years as a Center of Excellence in Multicultural,
American Indian, African and African American, Latino/a, Asian and Pacific
Islander and Women's Studies."

OPENING WEEK 2006
Friday, September 22 - Wednesday, September 27
Call for Opening Week Planning Committee Members
Opening Week, and especially the all-campus meeting, set the
tone for the academic year, so the activities of the week are
very important to us all. We are in a time of transition and
challenge, and still will be next year. Opening Week can help us
prepare for change, bring creativity and energy to our work, and
serve our students even better.
College Council has approved this call for faculty, staff and
administrators who want to help plan Opening Week 2006. The
group will work this spring with Interim President Lambert and
the PLT to choose a theme and framework and fine-tune logistics
for the all-campus meeting, professional development/training,
and other activities of the week. In the summer, the group
(those who are available) will work with the incoming president
(should the search prove successful) and finish the planning for
Opening Week.
This group will also give some thought to the Professional
Development Day for winter quarter, January 5, 2007. The group
needs solid representation from all the constituencies and
divisions; it will need to meet two to three times this quarter.
If you are interested in serving on the Opening Week Committee,

TEMPLATES FOR MEETING AGENDAS AND NOTES
One way to lessen the burden of meetings may be to start using
templates for meeting agendas and minute-taking. PLT is looking
at many ways to juggle minute-taking responsibilities for all
campus meetings, coupled with the need to keep accurate agendas,
minutes or notes (which, for our own protection, should also be
approved by the group for which the minutes are taken). Choose
an agenda template and a minutes template which are now
available on the intranet by clicking "Forms"
on the menu to the left. These templates are available only if
you wish to use them, but the idea is to offer a standard format
which may ease the assignment of note taking for those members
of committees who are called upon to take notes. This could
apply, for instance, in a briefly formed task force or a
long-standing meeting where no formal secretarial help is
assigned. Thanks to the College Council for providing the idea
that these templates be offered as a campus resource! If you
have questions, please contact Michele Foley at
mfoley@shoreline.edu .

If you are interested in serving on the Opening Week Committee,
please respond to Pam Dusenberry at x4626 or
pdusenbe@shoreline.edu.
