SPRING RECITAL
Friday, May 7 at 7:30PM in the MUSIC BUILDING ROOM 818
Graduating music students who have had intensive
music study at Shoreline Community College will be
presenting a spring recital. Each student will perform an
individual section comprised of various composers and
styles or one major composition. The featured performers
are Helen Ho, pianist; Fate Wong, mezzo soprano; Jacob
Wagner, pianist; Ginny Reilly, mezzo soprano; Vanessa
Small, pianist; Juliana Brandon, soprano; Ayako Ishida,
pianist; and Leo Jackson, baritone. The recital is free.
A reception follows the recital.

transfer to the University of Washington - Seattle.
Included are: general admissions requirements, the new
transfer agreement, and strategies for success.

to go higher yet. This just might be the time to think
about riding the bus, carpooling, biking, or walking to
work. Besides saving you money, your health might improve
as well.
We have been working
with Metro and Sound Transit on some commute trip
reduction ideas and we need your help and feedback. Would
you ride the bus if it were free? Would you take the
Sounder from the north end if it cost you nothing? Have
you thought about carpooling but don't know who lives
near you? We would like to encourage you to explore these
options. If these options are not attractive to you,
would you tell us why?

to enroll in this program.

Clinic for desktops and laptops. Diagnostic service
includes memory checks, performance improvements,
cleaning and preventative maintenance, hardware and
software upgrades, operating system patches, anti-virus
checks, and networking hardware and software. Campus
flyers have been posted and contact information for at
local office or home service may be arranged. This
diagnostic service will be offered weekly during the

Board for Community and Technical Colleges matching funds
for the purpose of awarding exceptional faculty awards
pursuant to RCW 28B.50.844. The interest earned from this
newly established endowment will be used to recognize
exceptional faculty at Shoreline Community College.
Any Shoreline
administrator, alumni, classified employee, faculty
member, foundation board member, student or trustee may

Skills Assessment Center
The Testing Center is happy to announce the Work Skills
Assessment Center at Lake Forest Park will be offering
COMPASS the computerized skills assessment test at their
location beginning May 17th. Testing will be available on
a first come, first served basis on Mondays at 11 am and
1 pm, Tuesdays at 5 pm, Wednesdays at 5 pm, and Saturdays

Student Government is accepting applications
through Friday, May 7th for the positions of Vice
President, Secretary and Student Advocate. These jobs pay
$11.11/hour for 20 hours/week. The term of office begins
July 1st through June of 2005. Applications and job
descriptions are available in the Student Programs and
Student Government offices in the PUB. Please encourage
qualified students to apply for these important
positions.

CLEAN-UP, BETTER THAN EVER
Friday, May 7 from 9 am- Noon, Courtyard
Each year the faculty and staff enjoy an outdoor
work day to make our campus look its very best before
graduation. This year we will provide beautiful bedding
plants to brighten and beautify our grounds. Crews should
pre-register. Any time you can spend will be appreciated.
You and your team will be given plants and an area to
work on. To sign up, please email Nancy Lamus at nlamus@shoreline.edu. Instead of the barbeque at the
end of the event, the SCC Foundation will provide tasty
treats to energize you during your enterprise.
Prizes will
go to teams with the best team name and the best garden
hat. New this year, the Golden Shovel will be awarded to
the individual or team with the most enthusiasm. Judging
will occur during the day by a committee. We have ordered
sunshine so bring your gloves, garden tools and
imagination and join us on Campus Beautification Day.

back, the woods are literally alive with animals and the
flowers a-buzz with pollinators. If possible, we'll make

FASTPITCH SOFTBALL GAMES
Friday, April 30 at 1:00 & 3:00 pm at Shoreview Park
The SCC women's fastpitch softball team is
currently tied for first place in the Northwest Division
with a 14-4 league record. This weekend, they will play
two home doubleheaders at Shoreview Park. On Friday they
will take on Everett - Game times at 1:00 and 3:00. Then
on Saturday they match up with Skagit Valley - Game times
at 3:00 and 5:00. Shoreview Park is located directly west
of campus on Innis Arden Way. Admission is free so come
out and support your team.

other treats. There will also be pamphlets and displays
from various local environmental groups including the

The network at CIS will be down from 4:30 PM to

OUTAGE
Sunday, April 25 from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm
As part of the ongoing construction project at
the 2900 Building, a major power conversion must be done.
The power will be shut down for the following buildings:
the 1800 Building, 1900 (Parent/Child Center) Building,
2000 (VCT) Building, 2100 (Automotive Center) Building,
2200 Building, 2300 Building, 2400 Building, 2500
Building, 2600 Building, 2700 Building, 2800 Building,
2900 Building, the Annex (Cosmetology), the 3000 (Gym)
Building, and the 5000 (FOSS) Building. The buildings not
listed here will be unaffected.
What to do: In
preparation for the power outage employees are asked to
unplug all sensitive equipment in their office area. This
includes computers, printers, copiers and scanners. These
devices should be unplugged from the wall outlet prior to
leaving work on Friday and should remain unplugged until
returning to work on Monday morning. TSS staff will take
care of the computer labs.
Other services
are impacted: The Internet, Blackboard, the
Student E-mail system, and the college web sites
(including the web interface to the e-mail system) will
be unavailable from on campus. These services will be
available from off campus. Web services that rely on the
SQL server (Continuing Ed. Registration, Student E-mail
Account Creation, etc), the online Library databases and
VPN access will be down both on and off campus.

Approximately 125 people attended the HomeStreet
Bank/Fannie Mae event to introduce the new home loan
program developed by HomeStreet Bank with Fannie Mae.
Con. Jay Inslee, College President Holly Moore and Fannie
Mae and HomeStreet representatives talked about the
program and the partnership. Fannie Mae and HomeStreet
Bank also sponsored a lunch and raffle ticket drawing. Karl

CHOPIN: The
Nostalgic Voice of An Exile
Sunday, April 25 at 3:00 pm in the Campus Theater
An all-Chopin piano recital, presenting his four
Ballades, Sonata No. 3 in B minor, and Mazurkas from Opus
24 & 33, is the last recital in the Shoreline Faculty
Piano Series. This concert will feature two of
Shorelines newest additions to the music
department, Dr. Iwona Kaminska and Christopher Bowlby.
This concert series benefits the Shoreline Piano

CONSIDER COLLEGE
INFORMATION NIGHT
Thursday, May 20 from 6:00 pm in the PUB Grand Ballroom
The Consider College Information Night is an
open house to introduce Shoreline Community College to
potential students and the general community. The evening
will open with a welcome and introduction to the College
and breakout sessions on important topics such as
financial aid, transferring to a university, WorkFirst,
and more. Tables will be available for people to browse
at will. If you are interested in participating in this

STATEWIDE
EARTHQUAKE DRILL
Thursday, April 22 at 9:45 am
On April 22, the state will conduct a statewide
earthquake drill beginning at 9:45 am. The College will
participate in this activity by conducting a DROP, COVER,
an HOLD drill. At 9:45 am, you will hear a siren sounded
across campus at which time you should DROP
to the floor, COVER yourself with a
table or desk, and HOLD onto this item
until the siren ends. The Public Information Office and
the Safety and Security Office will issue educational
materials for students and staff about the drill and the
DROP, COVER, and HOLD exercise. Watch for further
announcements or contact Judy Yu at jyu@shoreline.edu if you have
questions.

PRACTICES
Tuesday, April 20 from 3:00-4:30 pm in Room 1522
This is a facilitated discussion during which we
will learn what works best in each of our classrooms.
This approach is based on the clinical peer supervision
models used by therapists to avoid issues of
counter-transference (we won't be doing therapy nor using
therapy-speak), and was used successfully at the last
faculty retreat. 2nd session on Tuesday, May 18.
Facilitated by Matt Houghton (CEO).

RETURN TO SCC
Tuesday, April 20 at 7pm, PUB Dining Room
Experience the dynamic rhythms of Maasai culture
in a free presentation of music and dance from the
highlands of Kenya. A free dessert buffet featuring items
from around the world will follow the Tuesday night

SCC STAFF WIN
BIG AT HOMETOWN HOME LOAN EVENT
Approximately 125 people attended the HomeStreet
Bank/Fannie Mae event to introduce the new home loan
program developed by HomeStreet Bank with Fannie Mae.
Con. Jay Inslee, College President Holly Moore and Fannie
Mae and HomeStreet representatives talked about the
program and the partnership. Fannie Mae and HomeStreet
Bank also sponsored a lunch and raffle ticket drawing. Karl
Solem, Facilities, won a barbecue; Lindsey
Legaspi, Workfirst, won BBQ tools; and Student
Services' Sandy Schoenhals won a trip
with Kenmore Air.
COMMENCEMENT CAP
AND GOWN ORDERS
The timeline to submit Cap and Gown orders has
been extended to this coming Friday, April 23rd, 2004.
Those of you interested in participating in Commencement
on Sunday, June 6, please read the instructions and enter
your cap, gown and hood information at the Herff Jones
Cap & Gown Website in the enclosed attachment. If you have any questions or
concerns after inputting your personal data, do not
hesitate to email Lisa Smith at lsmi@shoreline.edu or call x4654.
TESTING SERVICES
The Testing Center now has a printed information
bulletin which includes the current testing schedule. On
the colleges website there is also a link to Testing
Services which includes the same information. The current
testing schedule has been extended through June 18, 2004.
GAS PRICES GOT
YOU DOWN???
Gas prices are going through the roof. They are
predicted to go higher yet. This just might be the time
to think about riding the bus, car pooling, biking, or
walking to work. Besides saving you money, your health
might improve as well.
We have been working
with Metro and Sound Transfer on some commute trip
reduction ideas and we need your help and feed back.
Would ride the bus if it were free? Would you take the
Sounder from the North end if it cost you nothing? Have
you thought about carpooling but don't know who lives
near you? We would like to encourage you to explore these
options. If these options are not attractive to you,
would you tell us why? If you are interested in any of
the above options, please e-mail Bev Brandt

to enroll in this program.
BOWLING FOR
BRAINS.... AND BUFFET!
Thursday, April 22 from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM at SPIN ALLEY
If you aren't on a bowling team this year you
can still join in on the fun. Come and cheer on those
that are bowling. For an entrance fee of $10 you can
watch the event, support the teams, eat at the
all-you-can-eat hearty hors d'oeuvres buffet, and maybe
even win one of the fabulous raffle prizes. Bowling will
begin at 6:30PM at Spin Alley - 1430 NW Richmond Beach
Rd. Come check out the costumes, have a bite to eat, chat
with friends and think about being on a team next year!
