SCC OUTLINES PERSONNEL IMPACTS FROM BUDGET CUTS
While no one would
characterize the personnel impacts of state-mandated budget reductions
at Shoreline Community College as anything but painful with more than 20
positions eliminated, making those cuts ultimately involved only two
actual layoffs.
“We worked very hard
to find options for people,” said SCC President Lee Lambert, adding that
contract-based bumping and position reversion rights, combined with
employees’ choices, made for a sometimes-convoluted process. “Sometimes
that process took more time, but we wanted to make sure everyone had
every chance. I want to thank (Vice President for Human Resources and
Legal Affairs) Stephen Smith taking the lead on working through these
difficult times.”
Lambert acknowledged
that even with those efforts, the college and many good people were
affected. “OK, two layoffs, but we still lost good, valuable people
through retirements, tenure buyouts and people deciding to leave,” he
said. “Those people represent a lot of experience and knowledge.”

BEWARE OF HOT, DRY WEATHER
Please
be aware of the dangers of dry weather and high temperatures,
such as bushfires, which actually took place on campus yesterday
between the Parent-Child Center and the Automotive Center.
Although it may seem harmless, a very small bush fire can
quickly turn into a real problem if a wind presents itself and
distributes the embers to other dangerously dry locations.
Dry leaves and branches can also escalate the fire as can the
slope of the land. Be sure to extinguish all combustibles in
approved containers. Again, please take extra care during
these dry, hot spells. Thank you.

FLAG AT HALF-STAFF IN MEMORY OF U.S.
ARMY FIRST LT. BRIAN BRADSHAW
Governor Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington State
agency facilities be lowered to half-staff Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in
memory of U. S. Army First Lieutenant Brian N. Bradshaw, 24, of
Steilacoom, who died on June 25, in Kheyl, Afghanistan, from injuries
sustained from the detonation of an improvised explosive device. The
flag will remain at half-staff until close of business today or first
thing Thursday morning.
CONSERVING ENERGY FRIENDLY REMINDER
What can we do about conserving energy? It is within the control of each
of us to do many small things that can add up to potential energy
savings for the college. Offices, classrooms, rest rooms, hallways, and
other lights are often left on when they are not needed. Electronic
devices could be turned off at night, including computers and printers.
If we work together, we can make real progress towards conserving
energy. Thank you for any help you can provide as you go about your work
each day.

SCC RECOGNIZED AT TULANE UNIVERSITY
COMMENCEMENT
Shoreline Community College is one of six colleges and universities
in Washington state to be recognized in the 2009 commencement program at
Tulane University. Shoreline was one of some 600 higher education
institutions acknowledged for supporting Tulane students when the
prestigious university was forced to close its doors for a semester due
to flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. President Lambert
received a letter from Tulane President, Scott S. Cowen, informing him
of Shoreline's tribute. President Cowen said, "I will always be grateful
to the higher education community for what you did for our students and
for Tulane. We will never forget your kindness and generosity.
Thank you." The Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees
adopted Resolution No. 91 on October 26, 2005. Establishing an
Operating Fee Waiver for Citizens Displaced as a Result of Hurricane
Katrina.

JAY INSLEE WEARS SCC
BASEBALL UNIFORM AT ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL BASEBALL GAME
U.S.
Congressmen leave their suits and ties in their closets one day each
year and choose, instead, to wear baseball jerseys and head for Nationals
Stadium to play ball. This year marked the 48th year of the Roll Call
Congressional Baseball Game, and Rep. Jay Inslee, who in the past has
worn uniforms from district high schools, decided to wear the Shoreline
Community College baseball uniform this year. One might say that
the jersey brought the blue team good luck, as they took home the
trophy, the first time since 2000, with a 15 to 10 win.

Woodmansee had presented the details of the proposed budget at a special
