COMMUNITY EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

NOTICE -Update Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010

The cause of death for a woman found in a heavily wooded area of the Shoreline Community College campus may not be known for several months.

A spokesman for the King County Medical Examiner’s Office said Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 that toxicology tests have been ordered in the case, which can take eight to ten weeks to be returned. The cause of death won’t be determined until test results are available, the spokesman said.

The body of a 42-year-old woman was found about 1:20 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3, in a homeless camp by Shoreline Police, according to John Urquhart, spokesman for the King County Sheriff's Office. Police notified college officials at about 1:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3.

Urquhart said the woman apparently died sometime during the night. He said the woman appeared to be staying at the camp and was not attending the college.

King County Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating the death and no arrests have been made, Urquhart said on Friday, Sept. 3.

Shoreline Community College is in the city of Shoreline, which contracts with the King County Sheriff's Office for police services.

OPENING WEEK 2010 SCHEDULE TAKES SHAPE
Opening Week 2010 is just around the corner and the planning group headed by VP Tonya Drake is getting ready to kickoff the new academic year. The theme for this year is "Transforming Shoreline: Shaping Our Destiny." A number events and presentations have been planned and on the attached draft schedule, but there's always room for more so if you have something you'd like to contribute, let Amy Stapleton know at astaplet@shoreline.edu. Although details are still being finalized and more information will be forthcoming, note that the all-campus meeting now carries the label, "Fall Convocation."

"'Convocation' can mean lots of things, " Drake said. "In our case, it just means a gathering of our community."

Updates have been made to Schedule Rough Draft August 20, 2010.

FIRE SYSTEM ALARM & SIREN TESTING
Tuesday, September 7, All Day, Campus-wide

Please note that the dates of the annual fire alarm system testing have unfortunately changed due to company scheduling. The new testing dates are now scheduled for Sept 7-10. I've requested the company make a special effort to do the large majority of the siren testing from 6 to 8 a.m., before campus activities get underway. They will, however, be on campus throughout the day testing the systems. I'm hopeful any disruptions will be kept to a minimum. If you experience a problem, please advise me at x4503. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Thank you.

BUDGET CUTS COMING AND ON TIGHTER TIMELINE
The hard work on budget reductions looks like it is going to start sooner rather than later, and the numbers to remember may just be 4, 6 and 10, according to Shoreline Community College President Lee Lambert.

“The presidents met Friday, Aug. 27, via ITV,” Lambert said. “The main agenda item was the state budget and the implications for the community and technical colleges.” While details are not yet available, Lambert said the picture of general reduction targets is clearer and the timeline shorter.

SCC FALL SPORTS RETURN WITH HIGH HOPES FOR 2010
The fall sports at Shoreline Community College kicked off their 2010 training camps Monday, August 16, with opening team meetings and practices. The women’s volleyball team, the women’s soccer team and the men’s soccer team returned to campus with high hopes for 2010.

The women’s soccer team, after winning four straight NWAACC Northern Region Championships between 2005 and 2008, finished second last season to Whatcom Community College. The Lady Dolphins, under long time coach Mark Szabo, hope to return to the top of the region and make another appearance at the NWAACC Final Four, as the team did in 2007 and 2008, finishing 3rd in both trips to the championship. SCC was 8-5-4 in 2009, 7-3-3 in the Northern Region. SCC beat Olympic College in the NWAACC playoffs, but lost in the quarterfinals to Walla Walla CC, the eventual NWAACC Women’s Champion.  Photo by Wilson Tsoi.  Read article in Shoreline Area News.
