Description of Committee: (Currently Under Revision)

Committee Name: Sustainability Committee

Purpose: To monitor and implement the standards of Shoreline Community College Environmental Policy 3800, shown at the bottom of this page.

Advisory to: Vice President for Business and Operations

Committee Required by Contract: The Sustainability Committee is not required by contract; however, it is required by the College Environmental Policy 3800, adopted by the Board of Trustees on June 21, 1996.

Meeting Frequency:  Once  to twice per month during the academic year

Communication of Agenda and Minutes:  Posted on Governance Web Site of College Intranet (http://intranet.shoreline.edu). Additionally, hard copies distributed and posted as needed.

Membership: The Director of Facilities Planning and Operations and the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor are permanent members. Constituency heads recommend to the college president one additional classified staff member, one additional administrator, two faculty members and two students.  Updated to consist of 5 each: Administrators, Faculty, Students, and Staff, non-voting members are allowed to participate in tasks and discussion.

Length of terms: Other than the two permanent members, committee members serve one-year renewable terms.

Environmental Policy 3800 (Currently Under Revision)

POLICY

Shoreline Community College is committed to conducting business in an environmentally responsibly fashion.  It shall be the policy of Shoreline Community College to:

bulletReduce the present and future risks of hazardous materials to members of the Shoreline campus.
bulletMeet or exceed the standards set by federal, state and local laws pertaining to hazardous materials.
bulletPromote the purchase and use of products manufactured using recycled and reusable materials.
bulletEstablish procedures to reduce waste in ongoing processes and to develop waste reduction procedures.
bulletEstablish recycling systems for non-hazardous materials.
bulletPromote conservation of energy, water, and other natural resources.
bulletEncourage conservation of fuels through promotion of bus, van and carpool use, bicycles, and other alternative methods of transportation.
bulletIncrease the awareness of environmental issues and practices.
bulletPromote improvements in indoor and outdoor air quality.
bulletDevelop, to the fullest extent possible, capital master plans and projects consistent with the provisions of the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA).
bulletEstablish a campus environmental committee to monitor and implement the standards set by this policy.
